IhadexecutedmySundaymanoeuveringonlyforamonthorfiveweeks,whenmydearC————C————wrotemejestinglythatIhadbecomealivingenigmaforalltheconvent,boardersandnuns,notevenexceptingtheoldones。Theyallexpectedmeanxiously;theywarnedeachotherofmyarrival,andwatchedmetakingtheholywater。TheyremarkedthatInevercastaglancetowardthegrating,behindwhichwerealltheinmatesoftheconvent;thatIneverlookedatanyofthewomencominginorgoingoutofthechurch。TheoldnunssaidthatIwascertainlylabouringundersomedeepsorrow,ofwhichIhadnohopetobecuredexceptthroughtheprotectionoftheHolyVirgin,andtheyoungonesassertedthatIwaseithermelancholyormisanthropic。

Mydearwife,whoknewbetterthantheothers,andhadnooccasiontoloseherselfinsuppositions,wasmuchamused,andsheentertainedmebysendingmeafaithfulreportofitall。Iwrotetoherthat,ifshehadanyfearofmybeingrecognizedIwouldceasemySundayvisitstothechurch。SheansweredthatIcouldnotimposeuponheramorecruelprivation,andsheentreatedmetocontinuemyvisits。

Ientreatyoutohavefaithinmyhonour,andtomeasuremypatiencebyyourown。Tomorrow,atthesameplaceandatthesamehour,I

Iwenttotheplaceappointed,andhavingmetthefemaleMercuryI
