Hisfifthargumentisthis:“IfbishopshavetheirjurisdictionimmediatelyfromGod,thePopecouldnottakeitfromthem,forhecandonothingcontrarytoGod’sordination“;andthisconsequenceisgoodandwellproved。“But,“saithhe,“thePopecandothis,andhasdoneit。“Thisalsoisgranted,sohedoitinhisowndominions,orinthedominionsofanyotherprincethathathgivenhimthatpower;

butnotuniversally,inrightofthepopedom:forthatpowerbelongethtoeveryChristiansovereign,withintheboundsofhisownempire,andisinseparablefromthesovereignty。BeforethepeopleofIsraelhad,bythecommandmentofGodtoSamuel,setoverthemselvesaking,afterthemannerofothernations,thehighpriesthadthecivilgovernment;andnonebuthecouldmakenordeposeaninferiorpriest。Butthatpowerwasafterwardsintheking,asmaybeprovedbythissameargumentofBellarmine;forifthepriest,behethehighpriestoranyother,hadhisjurisdictionimmediatelyfromGod,thenthekingcouldnottakeitfromhim;forhecoulddonothingcontrarytoGod’sordinance。ButitiscertainthatKingSolomondeprivedAbiatharthehighpriestofhisoffice,*andplacedZadokinhisroom。*(2)Kingsthereforemayinthelikemannerordainanddeprivebishops,astheyshallthinkfit,forthewellgoverningoftheirsubjects。
