Thefirepreparedforthewickedisaneverlastingfire：thatistosay，theestatewhereinnomancanbewithouttorture，bothofbodyandmind，aftertheresurrection，shallendureforever；andinthatsensethefireshallbeunquenchable，andthetormentseverlasting：

butitcannotthencebeinferredthathewhoshallbecastintothatfire，orbetormentedwiththosetorments，shallendureandresistthemsoasbeeternallyburntandtortured，andyetneverbedestroyednordie。Andthoughtherebemanyplacesthataffirmeverlastingfireandtorments，intowhichmenmaybecastsuccessivelyoneafteranotherforever，yetIfindnonethataffirmthereshallbeaneternallifethereinofanyindividualperson；buttothecontrary，aneverlastingdeath，whichistheseconddeath：“Forafterdeathandthegraveshallhavedeliveredupthedeadwhichwereinthem，andeverymanbejudgedaccordingtohisworks；deathandthegraveshallalsobecastintothelakeoffire。Thisistheseconddeath。“*(3)
