Indeed,theethicalinterestandvalueofthetheoryappearstometolieinitsveryone-sidedness。
Ittendstocorrectavulgarerrorintheestimateofpleasure,bydirectingattentionstronglytotheimportanceofaclassofpleasureswhichordinarypleasure-seekingprobablyundervalues,——thepleasuresthatspeciallybelongtoalifefilledwithstrenuousactivity,whetherpurelyintellectual,orpracticalandpartlyphysical。Inthesamewayiteffectivelydispelsthepopularinadvertenceofregardinglabourasnormallypainfulbecausesomelabourisso,andbecausethepleasuresconnectedwithrelieffromtoil——thepleasuresofreposeandplay——areintheexperienceofmostpersonsmorestrikingthanthepleasuresofstrenuousactivity。Atthesametime,evenifwelimitthetheorytothepleasuresandpainsimmediatelyconnectedwithvoluntaryactivity——intellectualorphysical——itseemstomedevoidnotonlyofdefiniteguidance,butalsoofadequatetheoreticalprecision。Foritseemstoimplythattheexerciseofourpowersisalwaysmadelesspleasantbythepresenceofimpediments;butthisisobviouslynottrueeitherofmainlyintellectualormainlyphysicalactivities。Someobstaclesundeniablyincreasepleasurebydrawingoutforceandskilltoovercomethem,asisclearlyshowninthecaseofgamesandsports:andevenifweunderstandpain-causingimpedimentstobeonlysuchhindrancesasrepressanddiminishaction,Idonotfindthatthetheoryissupportedbyexperience,exceptsofarastherepressioncausesthespecificdiscomfortofunsatisfieddesire。E。g。Ifindentertainmentratherthandiscomfortintryingtomakeoutobjectsinadimlight,orthemeaningofaspeechinastrangelanguage,providedthatfailuredoesnotinterferewiththeattainmentofanyendtowhichIattachimportance。ItisafundamentaldefectinHamilton’stheory,eveninitsmorelimitedapplication,thatitignorestheteleologicalcharacterofnormalhumanactivity。
