ThespecialanswergivenbyWardandNewmantothesepointsgivestheirtrueposition。Firstofallthedogmatists,agreeingsofarwiththeliberals,wereconvincedthattheordinaryopinionsofthedayledtoinfidelityortocompletescepticism。

Aperfectlyconsistentmindmust,asNewmandeclared,acceptCatholicismorAtheism。Anglicanismis’thehalf-wayhousetoRome,andLiberalismisthehalf-wayhouse’toAtheism。(226*)
