TheRussian—Japanesewarwasinprogressthatsummer,anditssettlementoccurredinAugust。ThetermsofitdidnotpleaseMarkTwain。Whenanewspapercorrespondentaskedhimforanexpressionofopiniononthesubjecthewrote:

Russiawasonthehighroadtoemancipationfromaninsaneandintolerableslavery。IwashopingtherewouldbenopeaceuntilRussianlibertywassafe。Ithinkthatthiswasaholywar,inthebestandnoblestsenseofthatabusedterm,andthatnowarwaseverchargedwithahighermission。

IthinktherecanbenodoubtthatthatmissionisnowdefeatedandRussia’schainriveted;thistimetostay。IthinktheTsarwillnowwithdrawthesmallhumanitiesthathavebeenforcedfromhim,andresumehismedievalbarbarismswitharelievedspiritandanimmeasurablejoy。IthinkRussianlibertyhashaditslastchanceandhaslostit。

Ithinknothinghasbeengainedbythepeacethatisremotelycomparabletowhathasbeensacrificedbyit。OnemorebattlewouldhaveabolishedthewaitingchainsofbillionsuponbillionsofunbornRussians,andIwishitcouldhavebeenfought。IhopeIammistaken,yetinallsincerityIbelievethatthispeaceisentitledtorankasthemostconspicuousdisasterinpoliticalhistory。
