Theseartificersmustbegroupedtogether,accordingtotheparticularbranchofscienceinwhichtheyneedelementaryandpracticalinstruction;andaspeciallectureorlecturesshouldbepreparedforeachgroup。Andtheselecturesshouldbegivenintheevening,soasnottointerruptthelaborsoftheday。Theschool,particularly,shouldbemaintainedwhollyatthepublicexpense,onthesameprincipleswiththatofthewardschools。Throughthewholeofthecollegiatecourse,atthehoursofrecreationoncertaindays,allthestudentsshouldbetaughtthemanualexercise;militaryevolutionsandman;oeuversshouldbeunderastandingorganizationasamilitarycorps,andwithproperofficerstotrainandcommandthem,Atabularstatementofthisdistributionofthescienceswillplacethesystemofinstructionmoreparticularlyinview:

Onthissurveyofthefieldofscience,Irecurtothequestion,whatportionofitwemarkoutfortheoccupationofourinstitution?Withthefirstgradeofeducationweshallhavenothingtodo。Thesciencesofthesecondgradeareourfirstobject;and,toadaptthemtoourslenderbeginnings,wemustseparatethemintogroups,comprehendingmanyscienceseach,andgreatlymore,inthefirstinstance,thanoughttobeimposedon,orcanbecompetentlyconductedbyasingleprofessorpermanently。Theymustbesubdividedfromtimetotime,asourmeansincrease,untileachprofessorshallhavenomoreunderhiscarethanhecanattendtowithadvantagetohispupilsandeasetohimself。Forthepresent,wemaygroupthesciencesintoprofessorships,asfollows,subject,however,tobechanged,accordingtothequalificationsofthepersonswemaybeabletoengage。
