Iamperfectlyawareoftheoppressionunderwhichyourpresentofficelaysyourmind,&oftheardorwithwhichyoupantforretirementtodomesticlife。Butthereissometimesaneminenceofcharacteronwhichsocietyhavesuchpeculiarclaimsastocontroulthepredelectionoftheindividualforaparticularwalkofhappiness,&restrainhimtothatalonearisingfromthepresent&

futurebenedictionsofmankind。Thisseemstobeyourcondition,&

thelawimposedonyoubyprovidenceinformingyourcharacter,&

fashioningtheeventsonwhichitwastooperate;anditistomotiveslikethese,¬topersonalanxietiesofmineorotherswhohavenorighttocallonyouforsacrifices,thatIappealfromyourformerdetermination&urgearevisalofit,onthegroundofchangeintheaspectofthings。Shouldanhonestmajorityresultfromthenew&enlargedrepresentation;shouldthoseacquiescewhoseprinciplesorinteresttheymaycontroul,yourwishesforretirementwouldbegratifiedwithlessdanger,assoonasthatshallbemanifest,withoutawaitingthecompletionofthesecondperiodoffouryears。Oneortwosessionswilldeterminethecrisis;andI

Thefearofsuspicionthatanyselfishmotiveofcontinuanceinofficemayenterintothissollicitationonmypartobligesmetodeclarethatnosuchmotiveexists。ItisathingofmereindifferencetothepublicwhetherIretainorrelinquishmypurposeofclosingmytourwiththefirstperiodicalrenovationofthegovernment。Iknowmyownmeasuretoowelltosupposethatmyservicescontributeanythingtothepublicconfidence,orthepublicutility。Multitudescanfilltheofficeinwhichyouhavebeenpleasedtoplaceme,asmuchtotheiradvantage&satisfaction。I

thereforehavenomotivetoconsultbutmyowninclination,whichisbentirresistiblyonthetranquilenjoymentofmyfamily,myfarm,&

mybooks。Ishouldreposeamongthemitistrue,infargreatersecurity,ifIweretoknowthatyouremainedatthewatch,andI
