Otherofthespur-points,standingontheolderwoodwherethesapwasnotsoeager,hadnotbursttheirtunicyet,butwereflayedandflakedwithlight,castingoffthehuskofbrowninthree-corneredpatches,asIhaveseenaScotchman’splaid,orashislegsshowsthroughit。Thesebuds,atadistance,lookedasiftheskyhadbeenrainingcreamuponthem。

Nowallthisfairdelighttotheeyes,andgoodpromisetothepalate,wasmarredandbaffledbythewindandcuttingofthenight-frosts。Theopeningconeswerestruckwithbrown,inbetweenthebuttonbuds,andonthescapesthatshieldedthem;whilethefootpartofthecoverhunglikerags,peeledback,andquivering。

Andtherethelittlestalkofeach,whichmighthavebeenapear,Godwilling,hadaringarounditsbase,andsoughtachancetodropanddie。Theotherswhichhadnotopenedcomb,butonlypreparedtodoit,werealittlebetteroff,butstillverybrownandunkid,andshrivellingindoubtofhealth,andneitherpeartnorlusty。
