Wherefore,ifthosequalitiesofthemindbutshineintheewherewithIamendowed,asintheeremaineththeperfectimageofmybody,thouwiltbeesteemedbyallmentobetheperfectguardianandtreasureoftheimmortalityofourname。But,ifotherwise,Ishalltrulytakebutsmallpleasuretoseeit,consideringthatthelesserpartofme,whichisthebody,wouldabideinthee,andthebest,towit,thatwhichisthesoul,andbywhichournamecontinuesblessedamongstmen,wouldbedegenerateandabastardized。ThisIdonotspeakoutofanydistrustthatIhaveofthyvirtue,whichIhaveheretoforealreadytried,buttoencouragetheeyetmoreearnestlytoproceedfromgoodtobetter。AndthatwhichInowwriteuntotheeisnotsomuchthatthoushouldstliveinthisvirtuouscourse,asthatthoushouldstrejoiceinsolivingandhavinglived,andcheerupthyselfwiththelikeresolutionintimetocome;totheprosecutionandaccomplishmentofwhichenterpriseandgenerousundertakingthoumaysteasilyrememberhowthatIhavesparednothing,buthavesohelpedthee,asifIhadhadnoothertreasureinthisworldbuttoseetheeonceinmylifecompletelywell-bredandaccomplished,aswellinvirtue,honesty,andvalour,asinallliberalknowledgeandcivility,andsotoleavetheeaftermydeathasamirrorrepresentingthepersonofmethyfather,andifnotsoexcellent,andsuchindeedasIdowishthee,yetsuchinmydesire。
