ThefameofourcityspreadevenacrosstheAtlantic,reachingobscurehamletsinEurope,wherevillagersgathereduptheirlaresandpenates,mortgagedtheirhomes,andboughtsteamshipticketsfromphilanthropists,——philanthropistsindiamonds.OurHunsbegantoarrive,theirAttilasunrecognizedamongthem:todriveourhonestAmericansandIrishandGermansoutofthemillsby"loweringthestandardofliving."
