Abundanceofatastelessraspberry,withblueandyellowcomposite,havesomewhatofatemperateaspect;andminutefernsandOrchideae,withdwarfBegoniasontherocks,makesomeapproachtoasub-alpinevegetation。Theforest,however,ismostluxuriant。Noblepalms,Pandani,andtree-fernsareabundantinit,whiletheforesttreesarecompletelyfestoonedwithOrchideae,Bromeliae,Araceae,Lycopodiums,andmosses。Theordinarystemlessfernsabound;somewithgiganticfrondstenortwelvefeetlong,othersbarelyaninchhigh;somewithentireandmassiveleaves,otherselegantlywavingtheirfinely-cutfoliage,andaddingendlessvarietyandinteresttotheforestpaths。Thecocoa-nutpalmstillproducesfruitabundantly,butissaidtobedeficientinoil。Orangesthrivebetterthanbelow,producingabundanceofdeliciousfruit;buttheshaddockorpumplemous(Citrusdecumana)requiresthefullforceofatropicalsun,foritwillnotthriveevenatTondanoathousandfeetlower。Onthehillyslopesriceiscultivatedlargely,andripenswell,althoughthetemperaturerarelyorneverrisesto80°,sothatonewouldthinkitmightbegrowneveninEnglandinfinesummers,especiallyiftheyoungplantswereraisedunderglass。
