ButImustalsoremindyou,thatthepowerofdialecticalonecanrevealthis,andonlytoonewhoisadiscipleoftheprevioussciences。

Ofthatassertionyoumaybeasconfidentasofthelast。

Andassuredlynoonewillarguethatthereisanyothermethodofcomprehendingbyanyregularprocessalltrueexistenceorofascertainingwhateachthingisinitsownnature;fortheartsingeneralareconcernedwiththedesiresoropinionsofmen,orarecultivatedwithaviewtoproductionandconstruction,orforthepreservationofsuchproductionsandconstructions;andastothemathematicalscienceswhich,asweweresaying,havesomeapprehensionoftruebeing——geometryandthelike——theyonlydreamaboutbeing,butnevercantheybeholdthewakingrealitysolongastheyleavethehypotheseswhichtheyuseunexamined,andareunabletogiveanaccountofthem。Forwhenamanknowsnothisownfirstprinciple,andwhentheconclusionandintermediatestepsarealsoconstructedoutofheknowsnotwhat,howcanheimaginethatsuchafabricofconventioncaneverbecomescience?

Impossible,hesaid。

Thendialectic,anddialecticalone,goesdirectlytothefirstprincipleandistheonlysciencewhichdoesawaywithhypothesesinordertomakehergroundsecure;theeyeofthesoul,whichisliterallyburiedinanoutlandishslough,isbyhergentleaidliftedupwards;andsheusesashandmaidsandhelpersintheworkofconversion,thescienceswhichwehavebeendiscussing。Customtermsthemsciences,buttheyoughttohavesomeothername,implyinggreaterclearnessthanopinionandlessclearnessthanscience:andthis,inourprevioussketch,wascalledunderstanding。Butwhyshouldwedisputeaboutnameswhenwehaverealitiesofsuchimportancetoconsider?

Whyindeed,hesaid,whenanynamewilldowhichexpressesthethoughtofthemindwithclearness?

Atanyrate,wearesatisfied,asbefore,tohavefourdivisions;
