Therewerevariousamusingfeaturesconnectedwiththetrip。Mostofthewealthypeopleand“leadersofopinion“intheEasterncitieswerepanic-struckattheproposaltotakethefleetawayfromAtlanticwaters。ThegreatNewYorkdailiesissuedfranticappealstoCongresstostopthefleetfromgoing。TheheadoftheSenateCommitteeonNavalAffairsannouncedthatthefleetshouldnotandcouldnotgobecauseCongresswouldrefusetoappropriatethemoney——hebeingfromanEasternseaboardState。However,IannouncedinresponsethatIhadenoughmoneytotakethefleetaroundtothePacificanyhow,thatthefleetwouldcertainlygo,andthatifCongressdidnotchoosetoappropriateenoughmoneytogetthefleetback,why,itwouldstayinthePacific。Therewasnofurtherdifficultyaboutthemoney。
