Abookmustbeinterestingtotheparticularreaderatthatparticulartime。Buttherearetensofthousandsofinterestingbooks,andsomeofthemaresealedtosomemenandsomearesealedtoothers;andsomestirthesoulatsomegivenpointofaman’slifeandyetconveynomessageatothertimes。Thereader,thebooklover,mustmeethisownneedswithoutpayingtoomuchattentiontowhathisneighborssaythoseneedsshouldbe。Hemustnothypocriticallypretendtolikewhathedoesnotlike。Yetatthesametimehemustavoidthatmostunpleasantofalltheindicationsofpuffed-upvanitywhichconsistsintreatingmereindividual,andperhapsunfortunate,idiosyncrasyasamatterofpride。IhappentobedevotedtoMacbeth,whereasIveryseldomreadHamlet(thoughIlikepartsofit)。NowIamhumblyandsincerelyconsciousthatthisisademeritinmeandnotinHamlet;
