inrealityanarchists——ofthefranklymurderoustypehavebeenviolentlyattackingmyspeechbecauseofmyallusiontothesympathyexpressedformurder。In/TheSocialist/,ofToledo,Ohio,ofApril21st,forinstance,theattack[onme]isbasedspecificallyonthefollowingparagraphofmyspeech,towhichhetakesviolentexception:

“Wecannomoreandnolessaffordtocondoneevilinthemanofcapitalthanevilinthemanofnocapital。Thewealthymanwhoexultsbecausethereisafailureofjusticeintheefforttobringsometrustmagnatetoanaccountforhismisdeedsisasbadas,andnoworsethan,theso-calledlaborleaderwhoclamorouslystrivestoexciteafoulclassfeelingonbehalfofsomeotherlaborleaderwhoisimplicatedinmurder。Oneattitudeisasbadastheother,andnoworse;ineachcasetheaccusedisentitledtoexactjustice;andinneithercaseisthereneedofactionbyotherswhichcanbeconstruedintoanexpressionofsympathyforcrime。

Iwishitwereinmypowertodevisesomeschemetomakeitincreasinglydifficulttoheapthemupbeyondacertainamount。Asthedifficultiesinthewayofsuchaschemeareverygreat,letusatleastpreventtheirbeingbequeathedafterdeathorgivenduringlifetoanyonemaninexcessiveamount。

OnanotheroccasionIwasvehementlydenouncedincertaincapitalisticpapersbecauseIhadanumberoflaborleaders,includingminersfromButte,lunchwithmeattheWhiteHouse;andthisattheverytimethattheWesternFederationofMinerswasmostferociousinitsdenunciationofmebecauseofwhatitallegedtobemyunfriendlyattitudetowardlabor。TooneofmycriticsIsetforthmyviewsinthefollowingletter:
