Whowasthewoman?Themanwhosavedherlifeneverknew。Themagistratewhoremandedher,thechaplainwhoexhortedher,thereporterwhoexhibitedherinprint,neverknew。Itwasrecordedofherwithsurprisethat,thoughmostrespectablydressed,shehadneverthelessdescribedherselfasbeing“indistress。”Shehadexpressedthedeepestcontrition,buthadpersistedingivinganamewhichwasonthefaceofitafalseone;intellingacommonplacestory,whichwasmanifestlyaninvention;andinrefusingtothelasttofurnishanyclewtoherfriends。Aladyconnectedwithacharitableinstitution(“interestedbyherextremeeleganceandbeauty“)hadvolunteeredtotakechargeofher,andtobringherintoabetterframeofmind。Thefirstday’sexperienceofthepenitenthadbeenfarfromcheering,andthesecondday’sexperiencehadbeenconclusive。Shehadlefttheinstitutionbystealth;and——thoughthevisitingclergyman,takingaspecialinterestinthecase,hadcausedspecialeffortstobemade——allsearchafterher,fromthattimeforth,hadprovedfruitless。

Whilethisuselessinvestigation(undertakenatAllan’sexpressdesire)wasinprogress,thelawyershadsettledthepreliminaryformalitiesconnectedwiththesuccessiontotheproperty。AllthatremainedwasforthenewmasterofThorpeAmbrosetodecidewhenhewouldpersonallyestablishhimselfontheestateofwhichhewasnowthelegalpossessor。
