IARRIVEDattheDevil’sBridgeatabouteleveno’clockofafinebutcoldday,andtookupmyquartersattheinn,ofwhichIwasthesoleguestduringthewholetimethatIcontinuedthere;fortheinn,standinginalone,wilddistrict,hasveryfewguestsexceptinsummer,whenitisthrongedwithtourists,whoavailthemselvesofthatgenialseasontoviewthewondersofWales,ofwhichtheregionclosebyisconsideredamongsttheprincipal。
Theinn,orratherhospice—forthesoundingnameofhospiceismoreapplicabletoitthanthecommononeofinn—wasbuiltatagreatexpensebythelateDukeofNewcastle。Itisanimmenseloftycottagewithprojectingeaves,andhasafinewindowtotheeastwhichenlightensastatelystaircaseandanoblegallery。Itfrontsthenorth,andstandsinthemidstofoneofthemostremarkablelocalitiesintheworld,ofwhichitwouldrequireafarmorevigor
