Carey\'ssuccessor,Mack,wrotethustoChristopherAndersontenmonthslater:——
"SERAMPORE,31stJanuary1834——Ourvenerablefather,Dr。Carey,isyetcontinuedtous,butinthesamestateinwhichhehasbeenforthelastthreemonthsorso。Heisquiteincapableofwork,andveryweak。Hecanwalkbutafewyardsatatime,andspendsthedayinreadingforprofitandentertainment,andinoccasionallynoddingandsleeping。Heisperfectlytranquilinmind。Hisimaginationdoesnotsoarmuchinvividanticipationsofglory;anditneverdisquietshimwithrestlessmisgivingsrespectinghisinheritanceinGod。Tohimitiseverythingthatthegospelistrue,andhebelievesit;and,ashesays,ifhecansayheknowsanything,heknowsthathebelievesit。Whenhisattentionisturnedtohisdismissalfromearth,orhishopeofglory,hisemotionsaretenderandsweet。Theyarealsoverysimple,andexpressthemselvesinafewbriefandpithysentences。Hisinterestinalltheaffairsofthemissionisunabated,andalthoughhecannolongerjoinuseitherindeliberationorassociatedprayer,hemustbeinformedofallthatoccurs,andhisheartiswhollywithusinwhateverwedo。Idonotconceiveitpossiblethathecansurvivetheensuinghotseason,buthemay,andtheLordwilldointhisasinallotherthingswhatisbest。
"WhenournecessitieswerecomingtotheirclimaxIconcludedthatI
mustleaveSeramporeinordertofindfoodtoeat,andIfixeduponCherra-poonjeeasmyfutureresidence。Iproposedestablishingafirst-classschoolthere,andthenwithsomewarmthofimaginationI
begananticipatingasortofsecondeditionofSeramporeupintheKhasiahills,tobeacentreofdiffusinglightinthewesternprovinces。Ibecamereallysomewhatenamouredofthephantomofmyimagination,butitwasnottobe。ThebrethrenherewouldnotseeitasIdid。"
Thislastsketch,byMr。Gogerly,whomtheLondonMissionarySocietyhadsentoutin1819,bringsusstillnearertheend:——
"AtthistimeIpaidhimmylastvisit。Hewasseatednearhisdesk,inthestudy,dressedinhisusualneatattire;hiseyeswereclosed,andhishandsclaspedtogether。Onhisdeskwastheproof-sheetofthelastchapteroftheNewTestament,whichhehadrevisedafewdaysbefore。Hisappearance,ashesatthere,withthefewwhitelockswhichadornedhisvenerablebrow,andhisplacidcolourlessface,filledmewithakindofawe;forheappearedasthenlisteningtotheMaster\'ssummons,andaswaitingtodepart。I

Thetearstrickleddownhischeeks,andafterawhileherelapsedintothesamestateofsilencefromwhichIhadarousedhim。
"Deeplysolemnwasthatinterview,andimportantthelessonIthenreceived。HerewasoneofthemostholyandharmlessmenwhomI
everknew——whohadlivedabovethebreathofcalumnyforupwardsoffortyyears,surroundedbyandincloseintimacywithmany,bothEuropeansandnatives,whowouldhaverejoicedtohavewitnessedanyinconsistencyinhisconduct,butwhowereconstrainedtoadmirehisintegrityandChristiancharacter——whilstthusconvincedofthecertaintyofhissalvation,throughthemeritsofthatSaviourwhomhehadpreached,yetsoimpressedwiththeexceedingsinfulnessofsin,thathetrembledatthethoughtofappearingbeforeaholyGod!
Afewdaysafterthisevent,Dr。Careyretiredtohisbed,fromwhichheneverrose。"
Solongbeforethisas17thMarch1802,CareyhadthusdescribedhimselftoDr。Ryland:——"Ayearormoreagoyou,orsomeotherofmydearfriends,mentionedanintentionofpublishingavolumeofsermonsasatestimonyofmutualChristianlove,andwishedmetosendasermonortwoforthatpurpose。Ihaveseriouslyintendedit,andmorethanoncesatdowntoaccomplishit,buthaveasconstantlybeenbrokenofffromit。Indolenceismyprevailingsin,andtothatarenowaddedanumberofavocationswhichIneverthoughtof;IhavealsosocontinualafearthatImayatlastfallsomewayorothersoastodishonourtheGospelthatIhaveoftendesiredthatmynamemaybeburiedinoblivion;andindeedIhavereasonforthosefears,forIamsopronetosinthatIwondereverynightthatIhavebeenpreservedfromfoulcrimesthroughtheday,andwhenIescapeatemptationIesteemittobeamiracleofgracewhichhaspreservedme。IneverwassofullypersuadedasIamnowthatnohabitofreligionisasecurityfromfallingintothefoulestcrimes,andIneedtheimmediatehelpofGodeverymoment。
Thesenseofmycontinualdangerhas,Iconfess,operatedstronglyuponmetoinducemetodesirethatnopublicationofareligiousnatureshouldbepublishedasminewhilstIamalive。Anotherreasonismysenseofincapacitytodojusticetoanysubject,oreventowritegoodsense。Ihave,itistrue,beenobligedtopublishseveralthings,andIcansaythatnothingbutnecessitycouldhaveinducedmetodoit。Theyare,however,onlygrammaticalworks,andcertainlytheverylastthingswhichIshouldhavewrittenifIcouldhavechosenformyself。"

HislastletterswerebriefmessagesofloveandhopetohistwosistersinEngland。On27thJuly1833hewrotetothem:——

HislatestmessagetoChristendomwassentonthe30thSeptember,mostappropriatelytoChristopherAnderson:——"AseverythingconnectedwiththefullaccomplishmentofthedivinepromisesdependsonthealmightypowerofGod,praythatIandalltheministersoftheWordmaytakeholdofHisstrength,andgoaboutourworkasfullyexpectingtheaccomplishmentofthemall,which,howeverdifficultandimprobableitmayappear,iscertain,asallthepromisesofGodareinHim,yea,andinHim,Amen。"Hadhenot,allhiscareer,thereforeexpectedandattemptedgreatthings?
Hehadhadachairfixedonasmallplatform,constructedafterhisowndirection,thathemightbewheeledthroughhisgarden。AtothertimesthechiefgardenerHullodhur,reportedtohimthestateofthecollectionofplants,thennumberingabout2000。Dr。
Marshmansawhisfrienddaily,sometimestwiceaday,andfoundhimalwayswhatLordHastingshaddescribedhimtobe——"thecheerfuloldman。"Ontheonlyoccasiononwhichheseemedsad,Dr。Marshmanashewasleavingtheroomturnedandaskedwhy。Withdeepfeelingthedyingscholarlookedtotheothersandsaid,"AfterIamgoneBrotherMarshmanwillturnthecowsintomygarden。"Thereplywasprompt,"Farbeitfromme;thoughIhavenotyourbotanicaltastes,thecareofthegardeninwhichyouhavetakensomuchdelight,shallbetomeasacredduty。"34
OfstrangershismostfrequentvisitorwastheGovernor-General\'swife,LadyWilliamBentinck。HerhusbandwasinSouthIndia,andshespentmostofhertimeinBarrackporeParkretreatoppositetoCarey\'shouse。Fromherfrequentconversewithhim,inhislifeaswellasnow,shestudiedtheartofdying。DanielWilson,BishopofCalcutta,learnedtodelightinSeramporealmostfromthebeginningofhislongepiscopate,andinlateryearshelivedtheremorethaninCalcutta。Onthe14thFebruary1833hefirstvisitedCarey,"hisinterviewwithwhom,confinedashewastohisroom,andapparentlyonthevergeofthecelestialworld,waspeculiarlyaffecting。"InthelastofsubsequentvisitstheyoungBishopaskedthedyingmissionary\'sbenediction。Withallthetalkwasthesame,ahumbleresignationtothewillofGod,firmtrustintheRedeemerofsinners,ajoyfulgratitudeforthewonderfulprogressofHisKingdom。Whatapictureisthisthathisbrethrensenthomesixweeksbeforehepassedaway。"Ouragedandvenerablebrotherfeelshimselfgrowinggraduallyweaker。Hecanscarcelyrisefromhiscouch,anditiswithgreatdifficultythatheiscarriedoutdailytotaketheair。Yetheisfreefromallpainastodisease,andhismindisinamostsereneandhappystate。Heisinfullpossessionofhisfaculties,and,althoughwithdifficulty,onaccountofhisweakness,hestillconverseswithhisfriendsfromdaytoday。"
ThehottestseasonoftheyearcreptwearilyonduringthemonthofMayandthefirstweekofJune。Eachnighthesleptwell,andeachdayhewasmovedtohiscouchinthedining-roomforair。Therehelay,unabletoarticulatemorethanawordortwo,butexpressingbyhisjoyfulfeaturesunioninprayerandinterestinconversation。
Onthe22ndMaytheEnglishmailarrivedwithgladdeningintelligencefromMr。Hope——God\'speoplewereprayingandgivinganewforthemission。EspeciallywashisownlateststationofCherra-poonjeeremembered。Ashewastoldthatalady,anonymously,hadoffered?00forthatmission,?00forthecollege,?00forthetranslations,and?00forthemissiongenerally,heraisedhisemaciatedhandstoheavenandmurmuredpraisetoGod。Whenthedeliriumofdeparturecamehestrovetoreachhisdeskthathemightwritealetterofthanks,particularlyforCherra。Thenhewouldrecallthefactthatthelittlechurchheatfirstformedhadbranchedoutintosixandtwentychurches,inwhichtheordinancesoftheGospelwereregularlyadministered,andhewouldwhisper,"WhathasGodwrought!"
ThelastSabbathhadcome——andthelastfullday。TheconstantMarshmanwaswithhim。"Hewasscarcelyabletoarticulate,andafteralittleconversationIkneltdownbythesideofhiscouchandprayedwithhim。FindingmymindunexpectedlydrawnouttoblessGodforHisgoodness,inhavingpreservedhimandblessedhiminIndiaforabovefortyyears,andmadehimsuchaninstrumentofgoodtoHischurch;andtoentreatthatonhisbeingtakenhome,adoubleportionofhisspiritmightrestonthosewhoremainedbehind;thoughunabletospeak,hetestifiedsufficientlybyhiscountenancehowcordiallyhejoinedinthisprayer。IthenaskedMrs。Careywhethershethoughthecouldnowseeme。Shesaidyes,andtoconvinceme,said,\'Mr。Marshmanwishestoknowwhetheryounowseehim?\'HeansweredsoloudlythatIcouldhearhim,\'Yes,I
do,\'andshookmemostcordiallybythehand。Ithenlefthim,andmyotherdutiesdidnotpermitmetoreachhimagainthatday。Thenextmorning,asIwasreturninghomebeforesunrise,ImetourBrethrenMackandLeechmanoutontheirmorningride,whenMacktoldmethatourbelovedbrotherhadbeenratherworseallthenight,andthathehadjustlefthimveryill。Iimmediatelyhastenedhome,throughthecollegeinwhichhehaslivedthesetenyears,andwhenIreachedhisroom,foundthathehadjustenteredintothejoyofhisLord——Mrs。Carey,hissonJabez,mysonJohn,andMrs。Mackbeingpresent。"
ItwasMondaythe9thJune1834,athalf-pastfive,asthemorningsunwasascendingtheheavenstowardstheperfectday。Therain-cloudsburstandcoveredthelandwithgloomnextmorningwhentheycarriedWilliamCareytotheconverts\'burial-groundandmadegreatlamentation。ThenoticewastooshortformanytocomeupfromCalcuttainthosedays。"Mr。Duff,oftheScottishChurch,returnedamostkindletter。"SirCharlesMetcalfeandtheBishopwroteveryfeelinglyinreply。LadyBentincksenttheRev。Mr。
FishertorepresenttheGovernor-Generalandherself,and"amostkindandfeelinganswer,forshetrulylovedthevenerableman,"
whileshesadlygazedatthemournersastheyfollowedthesimplefuneraluptherightbankoftheHoogli,pasttheCollegeandtheMissionchapel。Mr。Yates,whohadtakenalovingfarewellofthescholarhehadbeenreluctanttosucceed,representedtheyoungerbrethren;Lacroix,MicaiahHill,andGogerly,theLondonMissionarySociety。CorrieandDealtrydonotseemtohavereachedthespotintime。TheDanishGovernor,hiswife,andthemembersofcouncilwerethere,andtheflagdroopedhalf-masthighasontheoccasionofaGovernor\'sdeath。Theroadwaslinedbythepoor,HindooandMohammedan,forwhomhehaddonesomuch。Whenall,walkingintherain,hadreachedtheopengrave,thesunshoneout,andLeechmanledtheminthejoyousresurrectionhymn,"Whydowemourndepartingfriends?""Ithenaddressedtheaudience,"wroteMarshman,"and,contrarytoBrotherMack\'sforetellingthatIshouldnevergetthroughitfortears,Ididnotshedone。BrotherMackwasthenaskedtoaddressthenativemembers,buthe,seeingthetimesofargone,publiclysaidhewoulddosoatthevillage。BrotherRobinsonthenprayed,andweeping——thenneithermyselfnorfewbesidescouldrefrain。"InJannuggurvillagechapelintheeveningtheBengaliburialhymnwassung,P渞itranChristerMorone,"SalvationbythedeathofChrist,"andPranKrishna,theoldestdisciple,ledhiscountrymeninprayer。ThenMackspoketotheweepingconvertswithallthepathosoftheirownsweetvernacularfromthewords,"ForDavid,afterhehadservedhisowngeneration,bythewillofGodfellonsleep。"HadnotCarey\'sbeenaroyalcareer,eventhatofakingandapriestuntoGod?

Johnsobservedthatitisnotthedesireofthepersonsthemselvesbutoftheirfriendsforthem,towhichCareyreplied,"IthinkofothersinthatrespectasIdoofmyself。"Whenhissecondwifewastakenfromhim,hisaffectionsofarprevailedthatheraisedamemorialstone,andinhiswillleftthis"order"toMackandWilliamRobinson,hisexecutors:"Idirectthatmyfuneralbeasplainaspossible;thatIbeburiedbythesideofmysecondwife,CharlotteEmiliaCarey;andthatthefollowinginscriptionandnothingmoremaybecutonthestonewhichcommemoratesher,eitheraboveorbelow,astheremayberoom,viz。:——

Thesurvivingbrethrenseemtohavetakenthesmalloblongstone,withtheinscriptionaddedasdirected,andtohaveplaceditonthesouthsideofthedomedsquareblockofbrickandwhiteplaster——sincerenewedfromtimetotime——whichstandsintheleftcorneroftheGod\'s-acre,nowconsecratedbythemingleddustoffourgenerationsofmissionaries,converts,andChristianpeople。
Ward\'smonumentstandsinthecentre,andthatoftheMarshmanfamilyattherighthand。ThreeandahalfyearsafterwardsJoshuaMarshmanfollowedCarey;nottill1847wasHannahMarshmanlaidbesidehim,afteranoblelifeofeightyyears。Mackhadgonetheyearbefore,cutoffbycholeralikeWard。ButthebrotherhoodcannotbesaidtohaveendedtillJohnMarshman,C。S。I。,diedinLondonin1877。FromfirsttolastthethreefamiliescontributedtothecauseofGodfromtheirownearnings,ninetythousandpounds,andtheworldwouldneverhaveknownitbutforthelackofthecharitythatenviethnotonthepartofAndrewFuller\'ssuccessors。
Carey\'slastwillandtestamentbegins:"IutterlydisclaimalloranyrightortitletothepremisesatSerampore,calledthemissionpremises,andeverypartandparcelthereof;anddoherebydeclarethatIneverhad,orsupposedmyselftohave,anysuchrightortitle。IgiveandbequeathtotheCollegeofSeramporethewholeofmymuseum,consistingofminerals,shells,corals,insects,andothernaturalcuriosities,andaHortusSiccus;alsothefolioeditionofHortusWoburnensis,whichwaspresentedtomebyLordHastings;Taylor\'sHebrewConcordance,mycollectionofBiblesinforeignlanguages,andallmybooksintheItalianandGermanlanguages。"Hiswidow,Grace,whosurvivedhimashorttime,hadthelittlecapitalthatwashersbeforehermarriagetohim,andhedesiredthatshewouldchoosefromhislibrarywhateverEnglishbooksshevalued。Hisyoungestson,Jonathan,wasnotinwantofmoney。HehadpaidFelixandWilliamRs。1500eachinhislifetime。
InordertoleavealikesumtoJabez,hethusprovided:"Fromthefailureoffundstocarrymyformerintentionsintoeffect,Idirectthatmylibrarybesold。"Indyingasinlivingheisthesame——justtoothersbecauseself-devotedtoHimtowhomhethusformallywilledhimself,"OnThykindarmsIfall。"
TheIndianjournalsrangwiththepraisesofthemissionarywhosechildlikehumilityandsincerity,patriotismandlearning,hadlongmadeIndiaproudofhim。Aftergivinghimself,WilliamCareyhaddiedsopoorthathisbookshadtobesoldtoprovide?8710s。foroneofhissons。Onewriterassertedthatthismanhadcontributed"sixteenlakhsofrupees"tothecauseofChristwhileconnectedwiththeSeramporeMission,andthestatementwaseverywhererepeated。Dr。Marshmanthereuponpublishedtheactualfacts,"asnoonewouldhavefeltgreaterabhorrenceofsuchanattempttoimposeontheChristianpublicthanDr。Careyhimself,hadhebeenliving。"
AtatimewhentheoldSiccaRupeewasworthhalfacrown,Careyreceived,inthethirty-fourandahalfyearsofhisresidenceatSerampore,fromthedateofhisappointmenttotheCollegeofFortWilliam,?5,000。35Ofthishespent?500onhisBotanicGardeninthatperiod。Ifaccuracyisofanyvalueinsuchaquestion,whichhaslittlemorethanacuriousbiographicalinterest,thenwemustaddthesevenyearspreviousto1801,andweshallfindthattheshoemakerofHackletonreceivedinallforhimselfandhisfamily?00fromtheSocietywhichhecalledintoexistence,andwhichsenthimforth,whilehespentontheChristianisationandcivilisationofIndia?625receivedasamanufacturerofindigo;and?5,000asProfessorofSanskrit,Bengali,andMarathi,andBengaliTranslatortoGovernment,or?6,625inall。
"Itispossible,"wroteDr。Marshman,"thatif,insteadofthuslivingtoGodandhiscausewithhisbrethrenatSerampore,Dr。
Careyhad,liketheotherprofessorsinthecollege,livedinCalcuttawhollyforhimselfandhisfamily,hemighthavelaidbyforthemalakhofrupeesinthethirtyyearshewasemployedbyGovernment,andhadhebeenveryparsimonious,possiblyalakhandahalf。ButwhothatcontraststhepleasuresofsuchalifewiththoseDr。CareyenjoyedinpromotingwithhisownfundseveryplanlikelytoplantChristianityamongthenativesaroundhim,withouthavingtoconsultanyoneinthusdoing,buthistwobrethrenofoneheartwithhim,whocontributedasmuchashimselftotheRedeemer\'scause,andthefruitofwhichhesawbeforehisdeathinTwenty-sixGospelChurchesplantedinIndiawithinasurfaceofabouteighthundredmiles,andaboveFortylabouringbrethrenraiseduponthespotamidstthem——wouldnotpreferthelatter?Whatmusthavebeenthefeelingsonadeathbedofamanwhohadlivedwhollytohimself,comparedwiththejoyoustranquillitywhichfilledCarey\'ssoulintheprospectofenteringintothejoyofhisLord,andaboveallwithwhathefeltwhen,afewdaysbeforehisdecease,hesaidtohiscompanioninlabourforthirty-fouryears:\'Ihavenofears;I

IntheDanishChurchofSerampore,andintheMissionChapel,andafterwardsintheUnionChapelofCalcutta,Dr。MarshmanandMr。
MackpreachedsermonsonWilliamCarey。TheseandthediscoursedeliveredinCharlotteChapel,Edinburgh,onthe30thofNovember,byChristopherAnderson,weretheonlymaterialsfromwhichajustestimateofCareyandhisworkcouldbeformedforthenextquarterofacentury。All,andespeciallythelast,wereasworthyoftheirthemeas閘ogespronouncedinsuchcircumstancescouldbe。MarshmanspokefromthetextchosenbyCareyhimselfafewweeksbeforehisdeathascontainingthefoundationofhishopeandthesourceofhiscalmandtranquilassurance——"Forbygraceareyesaved。"Mackfoundhisinspirationagain,ashehaddoneintheBengalivillage,inPaul\'swords——"David,afterhehadservedhisowngeneration,bythewillofGodfellonsleep。"TheEdinburghpreacherturnedtothemessageofIsaiahwherewithCareyusedtocomforthimselfinhisearlyloneliness,andwhichtheRevisedVersionrenders——"LookuntoAbrahamyourfather;forwhenhewasbutoneIcalledhimandI
blessedhimandmadehimmany。"AndinBombaytheyoungcontemporarymissionarywhomostnearlyresembledCareyinpersonalsaintliness,scholarship,andself-devotion,JohnWilson,thuswrote:——
"Dr。Carey,thefirstoflivingmissionaries,themosthonouredandthemostsuccessfulsincethetimeoftheApostles,hasclosedhislongandinfluentialcareer。Indeedhisspirit,hislife,andhislabours,weretrulyapostolic……TheSpiritofGodwhichwasinhimledhimforwardfromstrengthtostrength,supportedhimunderprivation,enabledhimtoovercomeinafightthatseemedwithouthope。Likethebeloveddisciple,whomheresembledinsimplicityofmind,andinseekingtodrawsinnerstoChristaltogetherbythecordsoflove,heoutlivedhistrialstoenjoyapeacefulandhonouredoldage,toknowthathisMaster\'scausewasprospering,andthathisownnamewasnamedwithreverenceandblessingineverycountrywhereaChristiandwelt。Perhapsnomaneverexertedagreaterinfluenceforgoodonagreatcause。Whothatsawhim,poorandinseatsoflearninguneducated,embarkonsuchanenterprise,couldeverdreamthat,inlittlemorethanfortyyears,Christendomshouldbeanimatedwiththesamespirit,thousandsforsakealltofollowhisexample,andthattheWordofLifeshouldbetranslatedintoalmosteverylanguageandpreachedinalmosteverycorneroftheearth?"
AstheFounderandFatherofModernMissions,thecharacterandcareerofWilliamCareyarebeingrevealedeveryyearintheprogress,andasyet,thepurityoftheexpansionoftheChurchandoftheEnglish-speakingracesinthetwo-thirdsoftheworldwhicharestilloutsideofChristendom。The?3:2:6ofKetteringbecame?00,000beforehedied,andisnow?,000,000ayear。TheoneordainedEnglishmissionaryisnowabandof20,000menandwomensentoutby558agenciesoftheReformedChurches。Thesolitaryconverts,eachwithnoinfluenceonhispeople,orcountry,orgeneration,arenowacommunityof3,000,000inIndiaalone,andinallthelandsoutsideofChristendom5,000,000,ofwhom80,000aremissionariestotheirowncountrymen,andmanyareleadersofthenativecommunities。SincethefirsteditionoftheBengaliNewTestamentappearedatthebeginningofthecentury250,000,000ofcopiesoftheHolyScriptureshavebeenprinted,ofwhichonehalfarein370ofthenon-Englishtonguesoftheworld。TheBengaliSchoolofMudnabati,theChristianCollegeofSerampore,havesetinmotioneducationalforcesthatarebringingnationstothebirth,arepassingunderBibleinstructioneverydaymorethanamillionboysandgirls,youngmenandmaidensofthedarkracesofmankind。
TheseventhEarlofShaftesbury,thegreatestandmostpracticalEvangelicalofthenineteenthcenturyafterWilliamWilberforce,wrotethusinhisJournaloftheclasswhomCareyheadedintheeighteenth,andwhomWordsworthcommemoratedas"Notsedentaryall,therearewhoroamToscatterseedsofLifeonbarbarousshores。"

andweherehavebarelyaffectionenoughtothankGodthatsuchdeedshavebeendone。Talkof\'doinggood\'andbeing\'usefulinone\'sgeneration,\'why,theseadmirablemenperformedmoreinonemonththanIormanyothersshallperforminawholelife!"
TheeloquentDr。RichardWinterHamilton,reflectingthatsacrificetoheroesisreserveduntilaftersunset,recalledWilliamCarey,eightyearsafterhisdeath,as"wieldingapowertowhichalldifficultiesyielded,butthatpowernoiselessasalawofnature;
greatinconceptionaswellasinperformance;profoundasthosedeepcombinationsoflanguageinwhichtheIndianphilosophyandpolytheismhidethemselves,butgentleastheflowerwhichinhisbriefrecreationhelovedtotrain;awfulasthesage,simpleasthechild;speakingthroughtheEasternworldinasmanylanguages,perhaps,as\'thecloventonguesoffire\'represented;toberememberedandblessedaslongasGangesrolls!"
ThehistorianoftheBaptistMissionarySociety,andRobertHall,whomSirJamesMackintoshpronouncedthegreatestEnglishorator,havebothattemptedanestimateofCarey\'sgeniusandinfluence。
Dr。F。A。Coxremarks:——"HadhebeenborninthesixteenthcenturyhemighthavebeenaLuther,togiveProtestantismtoEurope;hadheturnedhisthoughtandobservationsmerelytonaturalphilosophyhemighthavebeenaNewton;buthisfaculties,consecratedbyreligiontoastillhigherend,havegainedforhimthesublimedistinctionofhavingbeentheTranslatoroftheScripturesandtheBenefactorofAsia。"RobertHallspokethusofCareyinhislifetime:——"Thatextraordinarymanwho,fromthelowestobscurityandpoverty,withoutassistance,rosebydintofunrelentingindustrytothehighesthonoursofliterature,becameoneofthefirstofOrientalists,thefirstofMissionaries,andtheinstrumentofdiffusingmorereligiousknowledgeamonghiscontemporariesthanhasfallentothelotofanyindividualsincetheReformation;amanwhouniteswiththemostprofoundandvariedattainmentsthefervourofanevangelist,thepietyofasaint,andthesimplicityofachild。"
ExcepttheportraitinLondonandthebustinCalcutta,nomemorial,national,catholic,orsectarian,markstheworkofCarey。ThatworkismeanwhilemostappropriatelyembodiedintheCollegefornativesatSerampore,intheLallBazaarchapelandBenevolentInstitutionforthepoorofCalcutta。TheChurchofEngland,whichheleft,likeJohnWesley,hasallowedE。S。Robinson,Esq。,ofBristol,toplaceaninscription,onbrass,intheporchofthechurchofhisnativevillage,besidethestonewhichheerectedovertheremainsofhisfather,Edmund,theparishclerk:——"TotheGloryofGodandinmemoryofDr。Wm。Carey,MissionaryandOrientalist。"

1。ArticletheThirdoftheChartergrantedbyhisDanishMajesty,havingauthorisedthefirstCouncilofSeramporeCollegeintheirlifetimetonominateundertheirhandandsealsuchotherpersonorpersonsforcolleaguesorsuccessorsasmaytothemappearmostproper,sothattheCouncilshallalwaysconsistofatleastthreepersons,theirsuccessorsintheCouncilshallbecompetentinlikemannertonominateintheirlifetime,undertheirseparatehandandseal,suchpersonorpersonsastheymaydeemmostpropertofillvacanciesthenexistingorwhichmayoccurontheirdemise;membersthusnominatedandchosenshallsucceedtotheCouncilinorderoftheirnomination。
2。ItbeingfixedintheCharterthattheCouncilmustconsistoftheMasterorPresidentandatleasttwo,butnomorethanfourMembers,andthatonthedemiseoftheMasternoactshallbedoneuntilanotherbeelected,theMasterandCouncilforthetimebeingshallappointthenextMasterundertheirseparatehandandseal。
IfonthedemiseofaMasternoonebefoundthusappointedunderthehandandsealofamajorityoftheCouncil,theSeniorMemberoftheCouncilshallsucceedasMaster。
3。TheCharterhavinggiventhecastingvotetotheMaster,inallcaseswhenthevotesareequalthecastingvoteshallliewiththeMaster,andiftherebenoMaster,itshallliewiththeSeniorMemberoftheCouncil。
4。LearningandpietybeingpeculiartonodenominationofChristians,onememberoftheCouncilmayatalltimesbeofanyotherdenominationbesidestheBaptist,topreservetheoriginaldesignoftheInstitution;however,ifontheelectionofaMasteranumberoftheCouncilbeequallydivided,thatpartwhichisentirelyoftheBaptistdenominationshallhavethecastingvote,whetheritincludestheMasterornot。
5。ThemanagementoftheCollege,includingitsrevenuesandproperty,thechoiceofProfessorandTutors,theadmissionofStudents,theappointmentofallfunctionariesandservants,andthegeneralorderandgovernmentoftheCollege,shalleverbevestedintheMasterandtheCouncil。TheMastershallseethattheStatutesandRegulationsoftheCouncilbedulycarriedintoeffect,andtakeorderforthegoodgovernmentoftheCollegeinallthings。Hissignatureisnecessarytothevalidityofalldeeds,instruments,documentsandproceedings。
6。"ThefirstCouncilandtheirsuccessorforever"beingauthorisedbytheCharter"toconfersuchdegreesofrankandhonourasshallencouragelearning"inthesamemannerasotherCollegesandUniversities,theyshallfromtimetotimeconferdegreesinsuchbranchesofKnowledgeandScienceasmaybestudiedthere,inthesamemannerastheUniversitiesinDenmark,GermanyandGreatBritain。IndoingthistheMasterandCouncilshalladlibitumcallintheaidofanyoralltheProfessorsofSeramporeCollege。Allsuchdegreesshallbeperfectlyfreeofexpensetothepersononwhomtheymaybeconferred,whetherhebeinIndia,EuropeorAmerica。
7。NooathsshallbeadministeredinSeramporeCollege,eithertotheMembersofCouncil,theProfessorsandTutors,ortheStudents。
Inallcasesasolemnpromise,dulyrecordedandsignedbytheparty,shallbeacceptedinsteadofanoath。
8。MarriageshallbenobartoanyofficeorsituationinSeramporeCollege,fromthatoftheMastertothatoftheloweststudent。
9。ThesalariesoftheProfessorsandTutorsinSeramporeCollegeshallbeappointed,andthemeansofsupportforallfunctionaries,studentsandservantsberegulatedbytheCouncilinsuchmannerasshallbestpromotetheobjectsoftheInstitution。
10。ItisintendedthatneithertheMasternoranyMemberoftheCouncilingeneralshallreceiveanysalary。ButanyMasterwhomaynotpreviouslyresideintheCollegeshallhavearesidencetherefreeofrentforhimselfandhisfamily。AndiftheCouncilshallelectanyoneinEuropeorinAmerica,whomtheydeememinentforlearningandpiety,aMemberoftheCouncil,withaviewtochoosinghimMaster,shouldtheyontrialdeemhimworthy,theCouncilshallbecompetenttoappointhimsuchsalaryastheymaydeemnecessary,notexceeding,however,thehighestgiventoaProfessor。
11。AsthefoundersoftheCollegedeemthebeliefofChrist\'sDivinityandAtonementessentialtovitalChristianity,thepromotionofwhichisthegrandobjectofthisInstitution,nooneshallbeeligibletotheCollegeCouncilortoanyProfessorshipwhoisknowntoopposethesedoctrines,andshouldanyoneoftheProfessorsoranymemberoftheCouncilunhappilysochangehisviewsafterhiselectionastoopposethesefundamentaldoctrinesofChristianity,onthisbeingclearlyanddecidedlyprovedfromhisteachingorhiswritings,heshallvacatetheofficehepreviouslyheld。ButeveryproceedingofthisnatureonthepartoftheCollegeCouncilshallbepublishedtotheChristianworld,withtheproofsonwhichitmayrest,asanAppendixtothesucceedingReport。
12。MembersoftheCouncilareeligiblefromamongtheProfessorsoftheCollege,orfromamonganyinIndia,Europe,orAmericawhomtheCollegeCouncilmaydeemsuitableinpointoflearning,piety,andtalent。
