Doubtlessthebeliefisstrong;doubtless,withthisweaklyandfancifulrace,itisinmanycasesstrongenoughtokill;itshouldbestrongindeedinthosewhotaputheirtreessecretly,sothattheymaydetectadepredatorbyhissickness。Or,perhaps,weshouldunderstandtheideaofthehiddentapuotherwise,asapoliticdevicetospreaduneasinessandextortconfessions:sothat,whenamanisailing,heshallransackhisbrainforanypossibleoffence,andsendatonceforanyproprietorwhoserightshehasinvaded。’Hadyouhiddenatapu?’wemayconceivehimasking;andIcannotimaginetheproprietorgainsayingit;andthisisperhapsthestrangestfeatureofthesystem-thatitshouldberegardedfromwithoutwithsuchamentalandimplicitawe,and,whenexaminedfromwithin,shouldpresentsomanyapparentevidencesofdesign。

Reglerhasseenthetwoextremesofscepticismandimplicitfear。

Inthetapugrovehefoundonefellowstealingbreadfruit,cheerfulandimpudentasastreetarab;anditwasonlyonamenaceofexposurethatheshowedhimselftheleastdiscountenanced。Theothercasewasopposedineverypoint。Mr。Regleraskedanativetoaccompanyhimuponavoyage;themanwentgladlyenough,butsuddenlyperceivingadeadtapufishinthebottomoftheboat,leapedbackwithascream;norcouldthepromiseofadollarprevailuponhimtoadvance。
