suppose,explainthecontrast。InScotlandwoodisrare,andwithmaterialssorudeasturfandstonetheveryhopeofneatnessisexcluded。AndinScotlanditiscold。Shelterandahearthareneedssopressingthatamanlooksnotbeyond;heisoutalldayafterabarebellyful,andatnightwhenhesaith,’Aha,itiswarm!’hehasnotappetiteformore。Orifforsomethingelse,thensomethinghigher;afineschoolofpoetryandsongaroseintheseroughshelters,andanairlike’LOCHABERNOMORE’isanevidenceofrefinementmoreconvincing,aswellasmoreimperishable,thanapalace。

Toonesuchdwellingplatformaconsiderabletroopofrelativesanddependantsresort。Inthehourofthedusk,whenthefireblazes,andthescentofthecookedbreadfruitfillstheair,andperhapsthelampglintsalreadybetweenthepillarsandthehouse,youshallbeholdthemsilentlyassembletothismeal,men,women,andchildren;andthedogsandpigsfrisktogetheruptheterracestairway,switchingrivaltails。Thestrangersfromtheshipweresoonequallywelcome:welcometodiptheirfingersinthewoodendish,todrinkcocoanuts,tosharethecirculatingpipe,andtohearandholdhighdebateaboutthemisdeedsoftheFrench,thePanamaCanal,orthegeographicalpositionofSanFranciscoandNewYo’ko。InaHighlandhamlet,quiteoutofreachofanytourist,I

havemetthesameplainanddignifiedhospitality。
