“Butwhatmademeanxiouswaswhatthechapsinthecanoesmightthinkwhentheycameback。Ifthey’dseenmeintheboatbeforeIwentdown,andwithoutthehelmeton——fortheymighthavebeenspyingandhidingsinceovernight——theywouldverylikelytakeadifferentviewfromtheothers。Iwasinadeuceofastewaboutthatforhours,asitseemed,untiltheshindyofthearrivalbegan。
