Thisgreatphilosopherfreelyacknowledgedhisownmistakesinnaturalphilosophy,becauseheproceededinmanythingsuponconjecture,asallmenmustdo;andhefoundthatGassendi,whohadmadethedoctrineofEpicurusaspalatableashecould,andthevorticesofDescartes,wereequallytobeexploded。HepredictedthesamefatetoATTRACTION,whereofthepresentlearnedaresuchzealousasserters。Hesaid,"thatnewsystemsofnaturewerebutnewfashions,whichwouldvaryineveryage;

andeventhose,whopretendtodemonstratethemfrommathematicalprinciples,wouldflourishbutashortperiodoftime,andbeoutofvoguewhenthatwasdetermined。"

Ispentfivedaysinconversingwithmanyothersoftheancientlearned。IsawmostofthefirstRomanemperors。IprevailedonthegovernortocallupHeliogabalus\'scookstodressusadinner,buttheycouldnotshowusmuchoftheirskill,forwantofmaterials。AhelotofAgesilausmadeusadishofSpartanbroth,butIwasnotabletogetdownasecondspoonful。

Thetwogentlemen,whoconductedmetotheisland,werepressedbytheirprivateaffairstoreturninthreedays,whichI

Icouldplainlydiscoverwhenceonefamilyderivesalongchin;

whyasecondhasaboundedwithknavesfortwogenerations,andfoolsfortwomore;whyathirdhappenedtobecrack-brained,andafourthtobesharpers;whenceitcame,whatPolydoreVirgilsaysofacertaingreathouse,NECVIRFORTIS,NECFOEMINACASTA;

howcruelty,falsehood,andcowardice,grewtobecharacteristicsbywhichcertainfamiliesaredistinguishedasmuchasbytheircoatsofarms;whofirstbroughtthepoxintoanoblehouse,whichhaslineallydescendedscrofuloustumourstotheirposterity。NeithercouldIwonderatallthis,whenIsawsuchaninterruptionoflineages,bypages,lackeys,valets,coachmen,gamesters,fiddlers,players,captains,andpickpockets。

Iwaschieflydisgustedwithmodernhistory。Forhavingstrictlyexaminedallthepersonsofgreatestnameinthecourtsofprinces,forahundredyearspast,Ifoundhowtheworldhadbeenmisledbyprostitutewriters,toascribethegreatestexploitsinwar,tocowards;thewisestcounsel,tofools;sincerity,toflatterers;Romanvirtue,tobetrayersoftheircountry;piety,toatheists;chastity,tosodomites;truth,toinformers:howmanyinnocentandexcellentpersonshadbeencondemnedtodeathorbanishmentbythepractisingofgreatministersuponthecorruptionofjudges,andthemaliceoffactions:howmanyvillainshadbeenexaltedtothehighestplacesoftrust,power,dignity,andprofit:howgreatashareinthemotionsandeventsofcourts,councils,andsenatesmightbechallengedbybawds,whores,pimps,parasites,andbuffoons。HowlowanopinionIhadofhumanwisdomandintegrity,whenIwastrulyinformedofthespringsandmotivesofgreatenterprisesandrevolutionsintheworld,andofthecontemptibleaccidentstowhichtheyowedtheirsuccess。

HereIdiscoveredtherogueryandignoranceofthosewhopretendtowriteanecdotes,orsecrethistory;whosendsomanykingstotheirgraveswithacupofpoison;willrepeatthediscoursebetweenaprinceandchiefminister,wherenowitnesswasby;

unlockthethoughtsandcabinetsofambassadorsandsecretariesofstate;andhavetheperpetualmisfortunetobemistaken。HereIdiscoveredthetruecausesofmanygreateventsthathavesurprisedtheworld;howawhorecangoverntheback-stairs,theback-stairsacouncil,andthecouncilasenate。Ageneralconfessed,inmypresence,"thathegotavictorypurelybytheforceofcowardiceandillconduct;"andanadmiral,"that,forwantofproperintelligence,hebeattheenemy,towhomheintendedtobetraythefleet。"Threekingsprotestedtome,"thatintheirwholereignstheyneverdidoncepreferanypersonofmerit,unlessbymistake,ortreacheryofsomeministerinwhomtheyconfided;neitherwouldtheydoitiftheyweretoliveagain:"andtheyshowed,withgreatstrengthofreason,"thattheroyalthronecouldnotbesupportedwithoutcorruption,becausethatpositive,confident,restifftemper,whichvirtueinfusedintoaman,wasaperpetualclogtopublicbusiness。"

Ihadthecuriositytoinquireinaparticularmanner,bywhatmethodsgreatnumbershadprocuredtothemselveshightitlesofhonour,andprodigiousestates;andIconfinedmyinquirytoaverymodernperiod:however,withoutgratinguponpresenttimes,becauseIwouldbesuretogivenooffenceeventoforeigners(forIhopethereaderneednotbetold,thatIdonotintheleastintendmyowncountry,inwhatIsayuponthisoccasion,)agreatnumberofpersonsconcernedwerecalledup;and,uponaveryslightexamination,discoveredsuchasceneofinfamy,thatIcannotreflectuponitwithoutsomeseriousness。Perjury,oppression,subornation,fraud,pandarism,andthelikeinfirmities,wereamongthemostexcusableartstheyhadtomention;andfortheseIgave,asitwasreasonable,greatallowance。Butwhensomeconfessedtheyowedtheirgreatnessandwealthtosodomy,orincest;others,totheprostitutingoftheirownwivesanddaughters;others,tothebetrayingoftheircountryortheirprince;some,topoisoning;moretothepervertingofjustice,inordertodestroytheinnocent,IhopeI

maybepardoned,ifthesediscoveriesinclinedmealittletoabateofthatprofoundveneration,whichIamnaturallyapttopaytopersonsofhighrank,whooughttobetreatedwiththeutmostrespectduetotheirsublimedignity,byustheirinferiors。

Ihadoftenreadofsomegreatservicesdonetoprincesandstates,anddesiredtoseethepersonsbywhomthoseserviceswereperformed。UponinquiryIwastold,"thattheirnamesweretobefoundonnorecord,exceptafewofthem,whomhistoryhasrepresentedasthevilestofroguesandtraitors。"Astotherest,Ihadneveronceheardofthem。Theyallappearedwithdejectedlooks,andinthemeanesthabit;mostofthemtellingme,"theydiedinpovertyanddisgrace,andtherestonascaffoldoragibbet。"

Iwassurprisedtofindcorruptiongrownsohighandsoquickinthatempire,bytheforceofluxurysolatelyintroduced;whichmademelesswonderatmanyparallelcasesinothercountries,wherevicesofallkindshavereignedsomuchlonger,andwherethewholepraise,aswellaspillage,hasbeenengrossedbythechiefcommander,whoperhapshadtheleasttitletoeither。

Aseverypersoncalledupmadeexactlythesameappearancehehaddoneintheworld,itgavememelancholyreflectionstoobservehowmuchtheraceofhumankindwasdegeneratedamonguswithinthesehundredyearspast;howthepox,underallitsconsequencesanddenominationshadalteredeverylineamentofanEnglishcountenance;shortenedthesizeofbodies,unbracedthenerves,relaxedthesinewsandmuscles,introducedasallowcomplexion,andrenderedthefleshlooseandrancid。

Idescendedsolow,astodesiresomeEnglishyeomanoftheoldstampmightbesummonedtoappear;oncesofamousforthesimplicityoftheirmanners,diet,anddress;forjusticeintheirdealings;fortheirtruespiritofliberty;fortheirvalour,andloveoftheircountry。NeithercouldIbewhollyunmoved,aftercomparingthelivingwiththedead,whenI

Ifreelyownmyselftohavebeenstruckwithinexpressibledelight,uponhearingthisaccount:andthepersonwhogaveitmehappeningtounderstandtheBalnibarbianlanguage,whichI

spokeverywell,Icouldnotforbearbreakingoutintoexpressions,perhapsalittletooextravagant。Icriedout,asinarapture,"Happynation,whereeverychildhathatleastachanceforbeingimmortal!Happypeople,whoenjoysomanylivingexamplesofancientvirtue,andhavemastersreadytoinstructtheminthewisdomofallformerages!buthappiest,beyondallcomparison,arethoseexcellentSTRULDBRUGS,who,beingbornexemptfromthatuniversalcalamityofhumannature,havetheirmindsfreeanddisengaged,withouttheweightanddepressionofspiritscausedbythecontinualapprehensionsofdeath!"IdiscoveredmyadmirationthatIhadnotobservedanyoftheseillustriouspersonsatcourt;theblackspotontheforeheadbeingsoremarkableadistinction,thatIcouldnothaveeasilyoverlookedit:anditwasimpossiblethathismajesty,amostjudiciousprince,shouldnotprovidehimselfwithagoodnumberofsuchwiseandablecounsellors。Yetperhapsthevirtueofthosereverendsageswastoostrictforthecorruptandlibertinemannersofacourt:andweoftenfindbyexperience,thatyoungmenaretooopinionatedandvolatiletobeguidedbythesoberdictatesoftheirseniors。However,sincethekingwaspleasedtoallowmeaccesstohisroyalperson,Iwasresolved,upontheveryfirstoccasion,todelivermyopiniontohimonthismatterfreelyandatlarge,bythehelpofmyinterpreter;

andwhetherhewouldpleasetotakemyadviceornot,yetinonethingIwasdetermined,thathismajestyhavingfrequentlyofferedmeanestablishmentinthiscountry,Iwould,withgreatthankfulness,acceptthefavour,andpassmylifehereintheconversationofthosesuperiorbeingstheSTRULDBRUGS,iftheywouldpleasetoadmitme。"

ThegentlemantowhomIaddressedmydiscourse,because(asI

havealreadyobserved)hespokethelanguageofBalnibarbi,saidtome,withasortofasmilewhichusuallyarisesfrompitytotheignorant,"thathewasgladofanyoccasiontokeepmeamongthem,anddesiredmypermissiontoexplaintothecompanywhatI

hadspoke。"Hedidso,andtheytalkedtogetherforsometimeintheirownlanguage,whereofIunderstoodnotasyllable,neithercouldIobservebytheircountenances,whatimpressionmydiscoursehadmadeonthem。Afterashortsilence,thesamepersontoldme,"thathisfriendsandmine(sohethoughtfittoexpresshimself)wereverymuchpleasedwiththejudiciousremarksIhadmadeonthegreathappinessandadvantagesofimmortallife,andtheyweredesiroustoknow,inaparticularmanner,whatschemeoflivingIshouldhaveformedtomyself,ifithadfallentomylottohavebeenbornaSTRULDBRUG。"

Ianswered,"itwaseasytobeeloquentonsocopiousanddelightfulasubject,especiallytome,whohadbeenoftenapttoamusemyselfwithvisionsofwhatIshoulddo,ifIwereaking,ageneral,oragreatlord:anduponthisverycase,IhadfrequentlyrunoverthewholesystemhowIshouldemploymyself,andpassthetime,ifIweresuretoliveforever。

"That,ifithadbeenmygoodfortunetocomeintotheworldaSTRULDBRUG,assoonasIcoulddiscovermyownhappiness,byunderstandingthedifferencebetweenlifeanddeath,Iwouldfirstresolve,byallartsandmethods,whatsoever,toprocuremyselfriches。Inthepursuitofwhich,bythriftandmanagement,Imightreasonablyexpect,inabouttwohundredyears,tobethewealthiestmaninthekingdom。Inthesecondplace,Iwould,frommyearliestyouth,applymyselftothestudyofartsandsciences,bywhichIshouldarriveintimetoexcelallothersinlearning。Lastly,Iwouldcarefullyrecordeveryactionandeventofconsequence,thathappenedinthepublic,impartiallydrawthecharactersoftheseveralsuccessionsofprincesandgreatministersofstate,withmyownobservationsoneverypoint。Iwouldexactlysetdowntheseveralchangesincustoms,language,fashionsofdress,diet,anddiversions。Byallwhichacquirements,Ishouldbealivingtreasureofknowledgeandwisdom,andcertainlybecometheoracleofthenation。

"Iwouldnevermarryafterthreescore,butliveinahospitablemanner,yetstillonthesavingside。Iwouldentertainmyselfinforminganddirectingthemindsofhopefulyoungmen,byconvincingthem,frommyownremembrance,experience,andobservation,fortifiedbynumerousexamples,oftheusefulnessofvirtueinpublicandprivatelife。Butmychoiceandconstantcompanionsshouldbeasetofmyownimmortalbrotherhood;amongwhom,Iwouldelectadozenfromthemostancient,downtomyowncontemporaries。Whereanyofthesewantedfortunes,Iwouldprovidethemwithconvenientlodgesroundmyownestate,andhavesomeofthemalwaysatmytable;onlyminglingafewofthemostvaluableamongyoumortals,whomlengthoftimewouldhardenmetolosewithlittleornoreluctance,andtreatyourposterityafterthesamemanner;justasamandivertshimselfwiththeannualsuccessionofpinksandtulipsinhisgarden,withoutregrettingthelossofthosewhichwitheredtheprecedingyear。

"TheseSTRULDBRUGSandIwouldmutuallycommunicateourobservationsandmemorials,throughthecourseoftime;remarktheseveralgradationsbywhichcorruptionstealsintotheworld,andopposeitineverystep,bygivingperpetualwarningandinstructiontomankind;which,addedtothestronginfluenceofourownexample,wouldprobablypreventthatcontinualdegeneracyofhumannaturesojustlycomplainedofinallages。

"Addtothis,thepleasureofseeingthevariousrevolutionsofstatesandempires;thechangesinthelowerandupperworld;

ancientcitiesinruins,andobscurevillagesbecometheseatsofkings;famousriverslesseningintoshallowbrooks;theoceanleavingonecoastdry,andoverwhelminganother;thediscoveryofmanycountriesyetunknown;barbarityoverrunningthepolitestnations,andthemostbarbarousbecomecivilized。Ishouldthenseethediscoveryofthelongitude,theperpetualmotion,theuniversalmedicine,andmanyothergreatinventions,broughttotheutmostperfection。

"Whatwonderfuldiscoveriesshouldwemakeinastronomy,byoutlivingandconfirmingourownpredictions;byobservingtheprogressandreturnofcomets,withthechangesofmotioninthesun,moon,andstars!"

Ienlargeduponmanyothertopics,whichthenaturaldesireofendlesslife,andsublunaryhappiness,couldeasilyfurnishmewith。WhenIhadended,andthesumofmydiscoursehadbeeninterpreted,asbefore,totherestofthecompany,therewasagooddealoftalkamongtheminthelanguageofthecountry,notwithoutsomelaughteratmyexpense。Atlast,thesamegentlemanwhohadbeenmyinterpreter,said,"hewasdesiredbytheresttosetmerightinafewmistakes,whichIhadfallenintothroughthecommonimbecilityofhumannature,anduponthatallowancewaslessanswerableforthem。ThatthisbreedofSTRULDBRUGSwaspeculiartotheircountry,fortherewerenosuchpeopleeitherinBalnibarbiorJapan,wherehehadthehonourtobeambassadorfromhismajesty,andfoundthenativesinboththosekingdomsveryhardtobelievethatthefactwaspossible:anditappearedfrommyastonishmentwhenhefirstmentionedthemattertome,thatIreceiveditasathingwhollynew,andscarcelytobecredited。Thatinthetwokingdomsabovementioned,where,duringhisresidence,hehadconversedverymuch,heobservedlonglifetobetheuniversaldesireandwishofmankind。Thatwhoeverhadonefootinthegravewassuretoholdbacktheotherasstronglyashecould。Thattheoldesthadstillhopesoflivingonedaylonger,andlookedondeathasthegreatestevil,fromwhichnaturealwayspromptedhimtoretreat。OnlyinthisislandofLuggnaggtheappetiteforlivingwasnotsoeager,fromthecontinualexampleoftheSTRULDBRUGSbeforetheireyes。

"Thatthesystemoflivingcontrivedbyme,wasunreasonableandunjust;becauseitsupposedaperpetuityofyouth,health,andvigour,whichnomancouldbesofoolishtohope,howeverextravaganthemaybeinhiswishes。Thatthequestionthereforewasnot,whetheramanwouldchoosetobealwaysintheprimeofyouth,attendedwithprosperityandhealth;buthowhewouldpassaperpetuallifeunderalltheusualdisadvantageswhicholdagebringsalongwithit。Foralthoughfewmenwillavowtheirdesiresofbeingimmortal,uponsuchhardconditions,yetinthetwokingdomsbeforementioned,ofBalnibarbiandJapan,heobservedthateverymandesiredtoputoffdeathsometimelonger,letitapproacheversolate:andherarelyheardofanymanwhodiedwillingly,excepthewereincitedbytheextremityofgriefortorture。Andheappealedtome,whetherinthosecountriesIhadtravelled,aswellasmyown,Ihadnotobservedthesamegeneraldisposition。"

Afterthispreface,hegavemeaparticularaccountoftheSTRULDBRUGSamongthem。Hesaid,"theycommonlyactedlikemortalstillaboutthirtyyearsold;afterwhich,bydegrees,theygrewmelancholyanddejected,increasinginbothtilltheycametofourscore。Thishelearnedfromtheirownconfession:

forotherwise,therenotbeingabovetwoorthreeofthatspeciesborninanage,theyweretoofewtoformageneralobservationby。Whentheycametofourscoreyears,whichisreckonedtheextremityoflivinginthiscountry,theyhadnotonlyallthefolliesandinfirmitiesofotheroldmen,butmanymorewhicharosefromthedreadfulprospectofneverdying。Theywerenotonlyopinionative,peevish,covetous,morose,vain,talkative,butincapableoffriendship,anddeadtoallnaturalaffection,whichneverdescendedbelowtheirgrandchildren。Envyandimpotentdesiresaretheirprevailingpassions。Butthoseobjectsagainstwhichtheirenvyseemsprincipallydirected,arethevicesoftheyoungersortandthedeathsoftheold。Byreflectingontheformer,theyfindthemselvescutofffromallpossibilityofpleasure;andwhenevertheyseeafuneral,theylamentandrepinethatothershavegonetoaharbourofresttowhichtheythemselvesnevercanhopetoarrive。Theyhavenoremembranceofanythingbutwhattheylearnedandobservedintheiryouthandmiddle-age,andeventhatisveryimperfect;andforthetruthorparticularsofanyfact,itissafertodependoncommontradition,thanupontheirbestrecollections。Theleastmiserableamongthemappeartobethosewhoturntodotage,andentirelylosetheirmemories;thesemeetwithmorepityandassistance,becausetheywantmanybadqualitieswhichaboundinothers。

"IfaSTRULDBRUGhappentomarryoneofhisownkind,themarriageisdissolvedofcourse,bythecourtesyofthekingdom,assoonastheyoungerofthetwocomestobefourscore;forthelawthinksitareasonableindulgence,thatthosewhoarecondemned,withoutanyfaultoftheirown,toaperpetualcontinuanceintheworld,shouldnothavetheirmiserydoubledbytheloadofawife。

"Assoonastheyhavecompletedthetermofeightyyears,theyarelookedonasdeadinlaw;theirheirsimmediatelysucceedtotheirestates;onlyasmallpittanceisreservedfortheirsupport;andthepooronesaremaintainedatthepubliccharge。

Afterthatperiod,theyareheldincapableofanyemploymentoftrustorprofit;theycannotpurchaselands,ortakeleases;

neitheraretheyallowedtobewitnessesinanycause,eithercivilorcriminal,notevenforthedecisionofmeersandbounds。

"Atninety,theylosetheirteethandhair;theyhaveatthatagenodistinctionoftaste,buteatanddrinkwhatevertheycanget,withoutrelishorappetite。Thediseasestheyweresubjecttostillcontinue,withoutincreasingordiminishing。Intalking,theyforgetthecommonappellationofthings,andthenamesofpersons,evenofthosewhoaretheirnearestfriendsandrelations。Forthesamereason,theynevercanamusethemselveswithreading,becausetheirmemorywillnotservetocarrythemfromthebeginningofasentencetotheend;andbythisdefect,theyaredeprivedoftheonlyentertainmentwhereoftheymightotherwisebecapable。

Thelanguageofthiscountrybeingalwaysupontheflux,theSTRULDBRUGSofoneagedonotunderstandthoseofanother;

neitheraretheyable,aftertwohundredyears,toholdanyconversation(fartherthanbyafewgeneralwords)withtheirneighboursthemortals;andthustheylieunderthedisadvantageoflivinglikeforeignersintheirowncountry。"

ThiswastheaccountgivenmeoftheSTRULDBRUGS,asnearasI

canremember。Iafterwardssawfiveorsixofdifferentages,theyoungestnotabovetwohundredyearsold,whowerebroughttomeatseveraltimesbysomeofmyfriends;butalthoughtheyweretold,"thatIwasagreattraveller,andhadseenalltheworld,"

theyhadnottheleastcuriositytoaskmeaquestion;onlydesired"IwouldgivethemSLUMSKUDASK,"oratokenofremembrance;whichisamodestwayofbegging,toavoidthelaw,thatstrictlyforbidsit,becausetheyareprovidedforbythepublic,althoughindeedwithaveryscantyallowance。

Theyaredespisedandhatedbyallsortsofpeople。Whenoneofthemisborn,itisreckonedominous,andtheirbirthisrecordedveryparticularlysothatyoumayknowtheiragebyconsultingtheregister,which,however,hasnotbeenkeptaboveathousandyearspast,oratleasthasbeendestroyedbytimeorpublicdisturbances。Buttheusualwayofcomputinghowoldtheyare,isbyaskingthemwhatkingsorgreatpersonstheycanremember,andthenconsultinghistory;forinfalliblythelastprinceintheirminddidnotbeginhisreignaftertheywerefour-scoreyearsold。

TheywerethemostmortifyingsightIeverbeheld;andthewomenmorehorriblethanthemen。Besidestheusualdeformitiesinextremeoldage,theyacquiredanadditionalghastliness,inproportiontotheirnumberofyears,whichisnottobedescribed;andamonghalfadozen,Isoondistinguishedwhichwastheeldest,althoughtherewasnotaboveacenturyortwobetweenthem。

Thereaderwilleasilybelieve,thatfromwhatIhadhearandseen,mykeenappetiteforperpetuityoflifewasmuchabated。I

grewheartilyashamedofthepleasingvisionsIhadformed;andthoughtnotyrantcouldinventadeathintowhichIwouldnotrunwithpleasure,fromsuchalife。Thekingheardofallthathadpassedbetweenmeandmyfriendsuponthisoccasion,andralliedmeverypleasantly;wishingIcouldsendacoupleofSTRULDBRUGS

tomyowncountry,toarmourpeopleagainstthefearofdeath;

butthis,itseems,isforbiddenbythefundamentallawsofthekingdom,orelseIshouldhavebeenwellcontentwiththetroubleandexpenseoftransportingthem。

Icouldnotbutagree,thatthelawsofthiskingdomrelativetotheSTRULDBRUGSwerefoundeduponthestrongestreasons,andsuchasanyothercountrywouldbeunderthenecessityofenacting,inthelikecircumstances。Otherwise,asavariceisthenecessaryconsequenceofoldage,thoseimmortalswouldintimebecomeproprietorsofthewholenation,andengrossthecivilpower,which,forwantofabilitiestomanage,mustendintheruinofthepublic。

CHAPTERXI。

IthoughtthisaccountoftheSTRULDBRUGSmightbesomeentertainmenttothereader,becauseitseemstobealittleoutofthecommonway;atleastIdonotremembertohavemetthelikeinanybookoftravelsthathascometomyhands:andifI

amdeceived,myexcusemustbe,thatitisnecessaryfortravellerswhodescribethesamecountry,veryoftentoagreeindwellingonthesameparticulars,withoutdeservingthecensureofhavingborrowedortranscribedfromthosewhowrotebeforethem。

ThereisindeedaperpetualcommercebetweenthiskingdomandthegreatempireofJapan;anditisveryprobable,thattheJapaneseauthorsmayhavegivensomeaccountoftheSTRULDBRUGS;butmystayinJapanwassoshort,andIwassoentirelyastrangertothelanguage,thatIwasnotqualifiedtomakeanyinquiries。

ButIhopetheDutch,uponthisnotice,willbecuriousandableenoughtosupplymydefects。

Hismajestyhavingoftenpressedmetoacceptsomeemploymentinhiscourt,andfindingmeabsolutelydeterminedtoreturntomynativecountry,waspleasedtogivemehislicensetodepart;andhonouredmewithaletterofrecommendation,underhisownhand,totheEmperorofJapan。Helikewisepresentedmewithfourhundredandforty-fourlargepiecesofgold(thisnationdelightinginevennumbers),andareddiamond,whichIsoldinEnglandforelevenhundredpounds。

Onthe6thofMay,1709,Itookasolemnleaveofhismajesty,andallmyfriends。ThisprincewassograciousastoorderaguardtoconductmetoGlanguenstald,whichisaroyalporttothesouth-westpartoftheisland。InsixdaysIfoundavesselreadytocarrymetoJapan,andspentfifteendaysinthevoyage。

Welandedatasmallport-towncalledXamoschi,situatedonthesouth-eastpartofJapan;thetownliesonthewesternpoint,wherethereisanarrowstraitleadingnorthwardintoalongarmofthesea,uponthenorth-westpartofwhich,Yedo,themetropolis,stands。Atlanding,Ishowedthecustom-houseofficersmyletterfromthekingofLuggnaggtohisimperialmajesty。Theyknewthesealperfectlywell;itwasasbroadasthepalmofmyhand。Theimpressionwas,AKINGLIFTINGUPA

LAMEBEGGARFROMTHEEARTH。Themagistratesofthetown,hearingofmyletter,receivedmeasapublicminister。Theyprovidedmewithcarriagesandservants,andboremychargestoYedo;whereI

wasadmittedtoanaudience,anddeliveredmyletter,whichwasopenedwithgreatceremony,andexplainedtotheEmperorbyaninterpreter,whothengavemenotice,byhismajesty\'sorder,"thatIshouldsignifymyrequest,and,whateveritwere,itshouldbegranted,forthesakeofhisroyalbrotherofLuggnagg。"ThisinterpreterwasapersonemployedtotransactaffairswiththeHollanders。Hesoonconjectured,bymycountenance,thatIwasaEuropean,andthereforerepeatedhismajesty\'scommandsinLowDutch,whichhespokeperfectlywell。

Ianswered,asIhadbeforedetermined,"thatIwasaDutchmerchant,shipwreckedinaveryremotecountry,whenceIhadtravelledbyseaandlandtoLuggnagg,andthentookshippingforJapan;whereIknewmycountrymenoftentraded,andwithsomeoftheseIhopedtogetanopportunityofreturningintoEurope:I

thereforemosthumblyentreatedhisroyalfavour,togiveorderthatIshouldbeconductedinsafetytoNangasac。"TothisI

addedanotherpetition,"thatforthesakeofmypatronthekingofLuggnagg,hismajestywouldcondescendtoexcusemyperformingtheceremonyimposedonmycountrymen,oftramplinguponthecrucifix:becauseIhadbeenthrownintohiskingdombymymisfortunes,withoutanyintentionoftrading。"WhenthislatterpetitionwasinterpretedtotheEmperor,heseemedalittlesurprised;andsaid,"hebelievedIwasthefirstofmycountrymenwhoevermadeanyscrupleinthispoint;andthathebegantodoubt,whetherIwasarealHollander,ornot;butrathersuspectedImustbeaChristian。However,forthereasonsIhadoffered,butchieflytogratifythekingofLuggnaggbyanuncommonmarkofhisfavour,hewouldcomplywiththesingularityofmyhumour;buttheaffairmustbemanagedwithdexterity,andhisofficersshouldbecommandedtoletmepass,asitwerebyforgetfulness。Forheassuredme,thatifthesecretshouldbediscoveredbymycountrymentheDutch,theywouldcutmythroatinthevoyage。"Ireturnedmythanks,bytheinterpreter,forsounusualafavour;andsometroopsbeingatthattimeontheirmarchtoNangasac,thecommandingofficerhadorderstoconveymesafethither,withparticularinstructionsaboutthebusinessofthecrucifix。

Onthe9thdayofJune,1709,IarrivedatNangasac,afteraverylongandtroublesomejourney。IsoonfellintothecompanyofsomeDutchsailorsbelongingtotheAmboyna,ofAmsterdam,astoutshipof450tons。IhadlivedlonginHolland,pursuingmystudiesatLeyden,andIspokeDutchwell。TheseamensoonknewwhenceIcamelast:theywerecurioustoinquireintomyvoyagesandcourseoflife。ImadeupastoryasshortandprobableasI

could,butconcealedthegreatestpart。IknewmanypersonsinHolland。Iwasabletoinventnamesformyparents,whomI

pretendedtobeobscurepeopleintheprovinceofGelderland。I

Beforewetookshipping,Iwasoftenaskedbysomeofthecrew,whetherIhadperformedtheceremonyabovementioned?Ievadedthequestionbygeneralanswers;"thatIhadsatisfiedtheEmperorandcourtinallparticulars。"However,amaliciousrogueofaskipperwenttoanofficer,andpointingtome,toldhim,"Ihadnotyettrampledonthecrucifix;"buttheother,whohadreceivedinstructionstoletmepass,gavetherascaltwentystrokesontheshoulderswithabamboo;afterwhichIwasnomoretroubledwithsuchquestions。

Nothinghappenedworthmentioninginthisvoyage。WesailedwithafairwindtotheCapeofGoodHope,wherewestaidonlytotakeinfreshwater。Onthe10thofApril,1710,wearrivedsafeatAmsterdam,havinglostonlythreemenbysicknessinthevoyage,andafourth,whofellfromtheforemastintothesea,notfarfromthecoastofGuinea。FromAmsterdamIsoonaftersetsailforEngland,inasmallvesselbelongingtothatcity。

Onthe16th,hewaspartedfromusbyastorm;Iheardsincemyreturn,thathisshipfoundered,andnoneescapedbutonecabinboy。Hewasanhonestman,andagoodsailor,butalittletoopositiveinhisownopinions,whichwasthecauseofhisdestruction,asithasbeenwithseveralothers;forifhehadfollowedmyadvice,hemighthavebeensafeathomewithhisfamilyatthistime,aswellasmyself。

Ihadseveralmenwhodiedinmyshipofcalentures,sothatI

wasforcedtogetrecruitsoutofBarbadoesandtheLeewardIslands,whereItouched,bythedirectionofthemerchantswhoemployedme;whichIhadsoontoomuchcausetorepent:forI

foundafterwards,thatmostofthemhadbeenbuccaneers。Ihadfiftyhandsonboard;andmyorderswere,thatIshouldtradewiththeIndiansintheSouth-Sea,andmakewhatdiscoveriesIcould。

Theserogues,whomIhadpickedup,debauchedmyothermen,andtheyallformedaconspiracytoseizetheship,andsecureme;

whichtheydidonemorning,rushingintomycabin,andbindingmehandandfoot,threateningtothrowmeoverboard,ifIofferedtostir。Itoldthem,"Iwastheirprisoner,andwouldsubmit。"

Thistheymademesweartodo,andthentheyunboundme,onlyfasteningoneofmylegswithachain,nearmybed,andplacedasentryatmydoorwithhispiececharged,whowascommandedtoshootmedeadifIattemptedmyliberty。Theysentmeownvictualsanddrink,andtookthegovernmentoftheshiptothemselves。Theirdesignwastoturnpiratesand,plundertheSpaniards,whichtheycouldnotdotilltheygotmoremen。Butfirsttheyresolvedtosellthegoodstheship,andthengotoMadagascarforrecruits,severalamongthemhavingdiedsincemyconfinement。Theysailedmanyweeks,andtradedwiththeIndians;butIknewnotwhatcoursetheytook,beingkeptacloseprisonerinmycabin,andexpectingnothinglessthantobemurdered,astheyoftenthreatenedme。

Uponthe9thdayofMay,1711,oneJamesWelchcamedowntomycabin,andsaid,"hehadordersfromthecaptaintosetmeashore。"Iexpostulatedwithhim,butinvain;neitherwouldhesomuchastellmewhotheirnewcaptainwas。Theyforcedmeintothelong-boat,lettingmeputonmybestsuitofclothes,whichwereasgoodasnew,andtakeasmallbundleoflinen,butnoarms,exceptmyhanger;andtheyweresocivilasnottosearchmypockets,intowhichIconveyedwhatmoneyIhad,withsomeotherlittlenecessaries。Theyrowedaboutaleague,andthensetmedownonastrand。Idesiredthemtotellmewhatcountryitwas。Theyallswore,"theyknewnomorethanmyself;"

InthisdesolateconditionIadvancedforward,andsoongotuponfirmground,whereIsatdownonabanktorestmyself,andconsiderwhatIhadbestdo。WhenIwasalittlerefreshed,I

wentupintothecountry,resolvingtodelivermyselftothefirstsavagesIshouldmeet,andpurchasemylifefromthembysomebracelets,glassrings,andothertoys,whichsailorsusuallyprovidethemselveswithinthosevoyages,andwhereofI

hadsomeaboutme。Thelandwasdividedbylongrowsoftrees,notregularlyplanted,butnaturallygrowing;therewasgreatplentyofgrass,andseveralfieldsofoats。Iwalkedverycircumspectly,forfearofbeingsurprised,orsuddenlyshotwithanarrowfrombehind,oroneitherside。Ifellintoabeatenroad,whereIsawmanytractsofhumanfeet,andsomeofcows,butmostofhorses。AtlastIbeheldseveralanimalsinafield,andoneortwoofthesamekindsittingintrees。Theirshapewasverysingularanddeformed,whichalittlediscomposedme,sothatIlaydownbehindathickettoobservethembetter。SomeofthemcomingforwardneartheplacewhereIlay,gavemeanopportunityofdistinctlymarkingtheirform。Theirheadsandbreastswerecoveredwithathickhair,somefrizzled,andotherslank;theyhadbeardslikegoats,andalongridgeofhairdowntheirbacks,andtheforepartsoftheirlegsandfeet;buttherestoftheirbodieswasbare,sothatImightseetheirskins,whichwereofabrownbuffcolour。Theyhadnotails,noranyhairatallontheirbuttocks,exceptabouttheanus,which,I

presume,naturehadplacedtheretodefendthemastheysatontheground,forthisposturetheyused,aswellaslyingdown,andoftenstoodontheirhindfeet。Theyclimbedhightreesasnimblyasasquirrel,fortheyhadstrongextendedclawsbeforeandbehind,terminatinginsharppoints,andhooked。Theywouldoftenspring,andbound,andleap,withprodigiousagility。Thefemaleswerenotsolargeasthemales;theyhadlonglankhairontheirheads,butnoneontheirfaces,noranythingmorethanasortofdownontherestoftheirbodies,exceptabouttheanusandpudenda。Thedugshungbetweentheirforefeet,andoftenreachedalmosttothegroundastheywalked。Thehairofbothsexeswasofseveralcolours,brown,red,black,andyellow。

Uponthewhole,Ineverbeheld,inallmytravels,sodisagreeableananimal,oroneagainstwhichInaturallyconceivedsostronganantipathy。Sothat,thinkingIhadseenenough,fullofcontemptandaversion,Igotup,andpursuedthebeatenroad,hopingitmightdirectmetothecabinofsomeIndian。Ihadnotgotfar,whenImetoneofthesecreaturesfullinmyway,andcomingupdirectlytome。Theuglymonster,whenhesawme,distortedseveralways,everyfeatureofhisvisage,andstared,asatanobjecthehadneverseenbefore;

thenapproachingnearer,lifteduphisfore-paw,whetheroutofcuriosityormischiefIcouldnottell;butIdrewmyhanger,andgavehimagoodblowwiththeflatsideofit,forIdurstnotstrikewiththeedge,fearingtheinhabitantsmightbeprovokedagainstme,iftheyshouldcometoknowthatIhadkilledormaimedanyoftheircattle。Whenthebeastfeltthesmart,hedrewback,androaredsoloud,thataherdofatleastfortycameflockingaboutmefromthenextfield,howlingandmakingodiousfaces;butIrantothebodyofatree,andleaningmybackagainstit,keptthemoffbywavingmyhanger。Severalofthiscursedbrood,gettingholdofthebranchesbehind,leapedupintothetree,whencetheybegantodischargetheirexcrementsonmyhead;however,Iescapedprettywellbystickingclosetothestemofthetree,butwasalmoststifledwiththefilth,whichfellaboutmeoneveryside。

Inthemidstofthisdistress,Iobservedthemalltorunawayonasuddenasfastastheycould;atwhichIventuredtoleavethetreeandpursuetheroad,wonderingwhatitwasthatcouldputthemintothisfright。Butlookingonmylefthand,Isawahorsewalkingsoftlyinthefield;whichmypersecutorshavingsoonerdiscovered,wasthecauseoftheirflight。Thehorsestartedalittle,whenhecamenearme,butsoonrecoveringhimself,lookedfullinmyfacewithmanifesttokensofwonder;

heviewedmyhandsandfeet,walkingroundmeseveraltimes。I

wouldhavepursuedmyjourney,butheplacedhimselfdirectlyintheway,yetlookingwithaverymildaspect,neverofferingtheleastviolence。Westoodgazingateachotherforsometime;atlastItooktheboldnesstoreachmyhandtowardshisneckwithadesigntostrokeit,usingthecommonstyleandwhistleofjockeys,whentheyaregoingtohandleastrangehorse。Butthisanimalseemedtoreceivemycivilitieswithdisdain,shookhishead,andbenthisbrows,softlyraisinguphisrightfore-foottoremovemyhand。Thenheneighedthreeorfourtimes,butinsodifferentacadence,thatIalmostbegantothinkhewasspeakingtohimself,insomelanguageofhisown。

WhileheandIwerethusemployed,anotherhorsecameup;whoapplyinghimselftothefirstinaveryformalmanner,theygentlystruckeachother\'srighthoofbefore,neighingseveraltimesbyturns,andvaryingthesound,whichseemedtobealmostarticulate。Theywentsomepacesoff,asifitweretoconfertogether,walkingsidebyside,backwardandforward,likepersonsdeliberatinguponsomeaffairofweight,butoftenturningtheireyestowardsme,asitweretowatchthatImightnotescape。Iwasamazedtoseesuchactionsandbehaviourinbrutebeasts;andconcludedwithmyself,thatiftheinhabitantsofthiscountrywereenduedwithaproportionabledegreeofreason,theymustneedsbethewisestpeopleuponearth。Thisthoughtgavemesomuchcomfort,thatIresolvedtogoforward,untilIcoulddiscoversomehouseorvillage,ormeetwithanyofthenatives,leavingthetwohorsestodiscoursetogetherastheypleased。Butthefirst,whowasadapplegray,observingmetostealoff,neighedaftermeinsoexpressiveatone,thatI

fanciedmyselftounderstandwhathemeant;whereuponIturnedback,andcameneartohimtoexpecthisfarthercommands:butconcealingmyfearasmuchasIcould,forIbegantobeinsomepainhowthisadventuremightterminate;andthereaderwilleasilybelieveIdidnotmuchlikemypresentsituation。

Thetwohorsescameupclosetome,lookingwithgreatearnestnessuponmyfaceandhands。Thegraysteedrubbedmyhatallroundwithhisrightfore-hoof,anddiscomposeditsomuchthatIwasforcedtoadjustitbetterbytakingitoffandsettlingitagain;whereat,bothheandhiscompanion(whowasabrownbay)appearedtobemuchsurprised:thelatterfeltthelappetofmycoat,andfindingittohanglooseaboutme,theybothlookedwithnewsignsofwonder。Hestrokedmyrighthand,seemingtoadmirethesoftnessandcolour;buthesqueezeditsohardbetweenhishoofandhispastern,thatIwasforcedtoroar;

afterwhichtheybothtouchedmewithallpossibletenderness。

Theywereundergreatperplexityaboutmyshoesandstockings,whichtheyfeltveryoften,neighingtoeachother,andusingvariousgestures,notunlikethoseofaphilosopher,whenhewouldattempttosolvesomenewanddifficultphenomenon。

Uponthewhole,thebehaviouroftheseanimalswassoorderlyandrational,soacuteandjudicious,thatIatlastconcludedtheymustneedsbemagicians,whohadthusmetamorphosedthemselvesuponsomedesign,andseeingastrangerintheway,resolvedtodivertthemselveswithhim;or,perhaps,werereallyamazedatthesightofamansoverydifferentinhabit,feature,andcomplexion,fromthosewhomightprobablyliveinsoremoteaclimate。Uponthestrengthofthisreasoning,Iventuredtoaddresstheminthefollowingmanner:"Gentlemen,ifyoubeconjurers,asIhavegoodcausetobelieve,youcanunderstandmylanguage;thereforeImakeboldtoletyourworshipsknowthatI

amapoordistressedEnglishman,drivenbyhismisfortunesuponyourcoast;andIentreatoneofyoutoletmerideuponhisback,asifhewerearealhorse,tosomehouseorvillagewhereIcanberelieved。Inreturnofwhichfavour,Iwillmakeyouapresentofthisknifeandbracelet,"takingthemoutofmypocket。ThetwocreaturesstoodsilentwhileIspoke,seemingtolistenwithgreatattention,andwhenIhadended,theyneighedfrequentlytowardseachother,asiftheywereengagedinseriousconversation。Iplainlyobservedthattheirlanguageexpressedthepassionsverywell,andthewordsmight,withlittlepains,beresolvedintoanalphabetmoreeasilythantheChinese。

IcouldfrequentlydistinguishthewordYAHOO,whichwasrepeatedbyeachofthemseveraltimes:andalthoughitwasimpossibleformetoconjecturewhatitmeant,yetwhilethetwohorseswerebusyinconversation,Iendeavouredtopractisethisworduponmytongue;andassoonastheyweresilent,IboldlypronouncedYAHOOinaloudvoice,imitatingatthesametime,asnearasI

could,theneighingofahorse;atwhichtheywerebothvisiblysurprised;andthegrayrepeatedthesamewordtwice,asifhemeanttoteachmetherightaccent;whereinIspokeafterhimaswellasIcould,andfoundmyselfperceivablytoimproveeverytime,thoughveryfarfromanydegreeofperfection。Thenthebaytriedmewithasecondword,muchhardertobepronounced;

butreducingittotheEnglishorthography,maybespeltthus,HOUYHNHNM。Ididnotsucceedinthissowellasintheformer;

butaftertwoorthreefarthertrials,Ihadbetterfortune;andtheybothappearedamazedatmycapacity。

Aftersomefurtherdiscourse,whichIthenconjecturedmightrelatetome,thetwofriendstooktheirleaves,withthesamecomplimentofstrikingeachother\'shoof;andthegraymademesignsthatIshouldwalkbeforehim;whereinIthoughtitprudenttocomply,tillIcouldfindabetterdirector。WhenIofferedtoslackenmypace,hewouldcryHHUUNHHUUN:Iguessedhismeaning,andgavehimtounderstand,aswellasIcould,"thatI

Havingtravelledaboutthreemiles,wecametoalongkindofbuilding,madeoftimberstuckintheground,andwattledacross;

Thegraycameinjustafter,andtherebypreventedanyilltreatmentwhichtheothersmighthavegivenme。Heneighedtothemseveraltimesinastyleofauthority,andreceivedanswers。

Beyondthisroomtherewerethreeothers,reachingthelengthofthehouse,towhichyoupassedthroughthreedoors,oppositetoeachother,inthemannerofavista。Wewentthroughthesecondroomtowardsthethird。Herethegraywalkedinfirst,beckoningmetoattend:Iwaitedinthesecondroom,andgotreadymypresentsforthemasterandmistressofthehouse;theyweretwoknives,threebraceletsoffalsepearls,asmalllooking-glass,andabeadnecklace。Thehorseneighedthreeorfourtimes,andIwaitedtohearsomeanswersinahumanvoice,butIheardnootherreturnsthaninthesamedialect,onlyoneortwoalittleshrillerthanhis。Ibegantothinkthatthishousemustbelongtosomepersonofgreatnoteamongthem,becausethereappearedsomuchceremonybeforeIcouldgainadmittance。But,thatamanofqualityshouldbeservedallbyhorses,wasbeyondmycomprehension。Ifearedmybrainwasdisturbedbymysufferingsandmisfortunes。Irousedmyself,andlookedaboutmeintheroomwhereIwasleftalone:thiswasfurnishedlikethefirst,onlyafteramoreelegantmanner。Irubbedmyeyesoften,butthesameobjectsstilloccurred。Ipinchedmyarmsandsidestoawakemyself,hopingImightbeinadream。Ithenabsolutelyconcluded,thatalltheseappearancescouldbenothingelsebutnecromancyandmagic。ButIhadnotimetopursuethesereflections;forthegrayhorsecametothedoor,andmademeasigntofollowhimintothethirdroomwhereIsawaverycomelymare,togetherwithacoltandfoal,sittingontheirhaunchesuponmatsofstraw,notunartfullymade,andperfectlyneatandclean。

Themaresoonaftermyentrancerosefromhermat,andcomingupclose,afterhavingnicelyobservedmyhandsandface,gavemeamostcontemptuouslook;andturningtothehorse,IheardthewordYAHOOoftenrepeatedbetwixtthem;themeaningofwhichwordIcouldnotthencomprehend,althoughitwasthefirstIhadlearnedtopronounce。ButIwassoonbetterinformed,tomyeverlastingmortification;forthehorse,beckoningtomewithhishead,andrepeatingtheHHUUN,HHUUN,ashedidupontheroad,whichIunderstoodwastoattendhim,ledmeoutintoakindofcourt,wherewasanotherbuilding,atsomedistancefromthehouse。Hereweentered,andIsawthreeofthosedetestablecreatures,whichIfirstmetaftermylanding,feedinguponroots,andthefleshofsomeanimals,whichIafterwardsfoundtobethatofassesanddogs,andnowandthenacow,deadbyaccidentordisease。Theywerealltiedbytheneckwithstrongwithesfastenedtoabeam;theyheldtheirfoodbetweentheclawsoftheirforefeet,andtoreitwiththeirteeth。

Themasterhorseorderedasorrelnag,oneofhisservants,tountiethelargestoftheseanimals,andtakehimintotheyard。

ThebeastandIwerebroughtclosetogether,andbyourcountenancesdiligentlycomparedbothbymasterandservant,whothereuponrepeatedseveraltimesthewordYAHOO。Myhorrorandastonishmentarenottobedescribed,whenIobservedinthisabominableanimal,aperfecthumanfigure:thefaceofitindeedwasflatandbroad,thenosedepressed,thelipslarge,andthemouthwide;butthesedifferencesarecommontoallsavagenations,wherethelineamentsofthecountenancearedistorted,bythenativessufferingtheirinfantstoliegrovellingontheearth,orbycarryingthemontheirbacks,nuzzlingwiththeirfaceagainstthemothers\'shoulders。Thefore-feetoftheYAHOO

differedfrommyhandsinnothingelsebutthelengthofthenails,thecoarsenessandbrownnessofthepalms,andthehairinessonthebacks。Therewasthesameresemblancebetweenourfeet,withthesamedifferences;whichIknewverywell,thoughthehorsesdidnot,becauseofmyshoesandstockings;thesameineverypartofourbodiesexceptastohairinessandcolour,whichIhavealreadydescribed。

Thegreatdifficultythatseemedtostickwiththetwohorses,wastoseetherestofmybodysoverydifferentfromthatofaYAHOO,forwhichIwasobligedtomyclothes,whereoftheyhadnoconception。Thesorrelnagofferedmearoot,whichheheld(aftertheirmanner,asweshalldescribeinitsproperplace)

betweenhishoofandpastern;Itookitinmyhand,and,havingsmeltit,returnedittohimagainascivillyasIcould。HebroughtoutoftheYAHOOS\'kennelapieceofass\'sflesh;butitsmeltsooffensivelythatIturnedfromitwithloathing:hethenthrewittotheYAHOO,bywhomitwasgreedilydevoured。Heafterwardsshowedmeawispofhay,andafetlockfullofoats;

butIshookmyhead,tosignifythatneitherofthesewerefoodforme。AndindeedInowapprehendedthatImustabsolutelystarve,ifIdidnotgettosomeofmyownspecies;forastothosefilthyYAHOOS,althoughtherewerefewgreaterloversofmankindatthattimethanmyself,yetIconfessIneversawanysensitivebeingsodetestableonallaccounts;andthemoreI

camenearthemthemorehatefultheygrew,whileIstayedinthatcountry。Thisthemasterhorseobservedbymybehaviour,andthereforesenttheYAHOObacktohiskennel。Hethenputhisfore-hooftohismouth,atwhichIwasmuchsurprised,althoughhediditwithease,andwithamotionthatappearedperfectlynatural,andmadeothersigns,toknowwhatIwouldeat;butI

couldnotreturnhimsuchananswerashewasabletoapprehend;

andifhehadunderstoodme,Ididnotseehowitwaspossibletocontriveanywayforfindingmyselfnourishment。Whilewewerethusengaged,Iobservedacowpassingby,whereuponIpointedtoher,andexpressedadesiretogoandmilkher。Thishaditseffect;forheledmebackintothehouse,andorderedamare-servanttoopenaroom,whereagoodstoreofmilklayinearthenandwoodenvessels,afteraveryorderlyandcleanlymanner。Shegavemealargebowlful,ofwhichIdrankveryheartily,andfoundmyselfwellrefreshed。

Aboutnoon,IsawcomingtowardsthehouseakindofvehicledrawnlikeasledgebyfourYAHOOS。Therewasinitanoldsteed,whoseemedtobeofquality;healightedwithhishind-feetforward,havingbyaccidentgotahurtinhisleftfore-foot。Hecametodinewithourhorse,whoreceivedhimwithgreatcivility。Theydinedinthebestroom,andhadoatsboiledinmilkforthesecondcourse,whichtheoldhorseatewarm,buttherestcold。Theirmangerswereplacedcircularinthemiddleoftheroom,anddividedintoseveralpartitions,roundwhichtheysatontheirhaunches,uponbossesofstraw。Inthemiddlewasalargerack,withanglesansweringtoeverypartitionofthemanger;sothateachhorseandmareatetheirownhay,andtheirownmashofoatsandmilk,withmuchdecencyandregularity。Thebehaviouroftheyoungcoltandfoalappearedverymodest,andthatofthemasterandmistressextremelycheerfulandcomplaisanttotheirguest。Thegrayorderedmetostandbyhim;

andmuchdiscoursepassedbetweenhimandhisfriendconcerningme,asIfoundbythestranger\'softenlookingonme,andthefrequentrepetitionofthewordYAHOO。

Ihappenedtowearmygloves,whichthemastergrayobserving,seemedperplexed,discoveringsignsofwonderwhatIhaddonetomyfore-feet。Heputhishoofthreeorfourtimestothem,asifhewouldsignify,thatIshouldreducethemtotheirformershape,whichIpresentlydid,pullingoffbothmygloves,andputtingthemintomypocket。Thisoccasionedfarthertalk;andI

sawthecompanywaspleasedwithmybehaviour,whereofIsoonfoundthegoodeffects。IwasorderedtospeakthefewwordsI

understood;andwhiletheywereatdinner,themastertaughtmethenamesforoats,milk,fire,water,andsomeothers,whichI

couldreadilypronounceafterhim,havingfrommyyouthagreatfacilityinlearninglanguages。

Whendinnerwasdone,themasterhorsetookmeaside,andbysignsandwordsmademeunderstandtheconcernhewasinthatI

hadnothingtoeat。OatsintheirtonguearecalledHLUNNH。

ThiswordIpronouncedtwoorthreetimes;foralthoughIhadrefusedthematfirst,yet,uponsecondthoughts,IconsideredthatIcouldcontrivetomakeofthemakindofbread,whichmightbesufficient,withmilk,tokeepmealive,tillIcouldmakemyescapetosomeothercountry,andtocreaturesofmyownspecies。Thehorseimmediatelyorderedawhitemareservantofhisfamilytobringmeagoodquantityofoatsinasortofwoodentray。TheseIheatedbeforethefire,aswellasIcould,andrubbedthemtillthehuskscameoff,whichImadeashifttowinnowfromthegrain。Igroundandbeatthembetweentwostones;

thentookwater,andmadethemintoapasteorcake,whichI
