Oneday,ayounggentleman,whowasnephewtomynurse\'sgoverness,cameandpressedthembothtoseeanexecution。Itwasofaman,whohadmurderedoneofthatgentleman\'sintimateacquaintance。Glumdalclitchwasprevailedontobeofthecompany,verymuchagainstherinclination,forshewasnaturallytender-hearted:and,asformyself,althoughIabhorredsuchkindofspectacles,yetmycuriositytemptedmetoseesomethingthatIthoughtmustbeextraordinary。Themalefactorwasfixedinachairuponascaffolderectedforthatpurpose,andhisheadcutoffatoneblow,withaswordofaboutfortyfeetlong。Theveinsandarteriesspoutedupsuchaprodigiousquantityofblood,andsohighintheair,thatthegreatJETD\'EAUatVersailleswasnotequaltoitforthetimeitlasted:andthehead,whenitfellonthescaffoldfloor,gavesuchabounceasmademestart,althoughIwasatleasthalfanEnglishmiledistant。

Iusedtoattendtheking\'sleveeonceortwiceaweek,andhadoftenseenhimunderthebarber\'shand,whichindeedwasatfirstveryterribletobehold;fortherazorwasalmosttwiceaslongasanordinaryscythe。Hismajesty,accordingtothecustomofthecountry,wasonlyshavedtwicea-week。Ionceprevailedonthebarbertogivemesomeofthesudsorlather,outofwhichI
