CHAPTERV。

[Severaladventurersthathappenedtotheauthor。Theexecutionofacriminal。Theauthorshowshisskillinnavigation。]

Ishouldhavelivedhappyenoughinthatcountry,ifmylittlenesshadnotexposedmetoseveralridiculousandtroublesomeaccidents;someofwhichIshallventuretorelate。

Glumdalclitchoftencarriedmeintothegardensofthecourtinmysmallerbox,andwouldsometimestakemeoutofit,andholdmeinherhand,orsetmedowntowalk。Iremember,beforethedwarfleftthequeen,hefollowedusonedayintothosegardens,andmynursehavingsetmedown,heandIbeingclosetogether,nearsomedwarfappletrees,Imustneedsshowmywit,byasillyallusionbetweenhimandthetrees,whichhappenstoholdintheirlanguageasitdoesinours。Whereupon,themaliciousrogue,watchinghisopportunity,whenIwaswalkingunderoneofthem,shookitdirectlyovermyhead,bywhichadozenapples,eachofthemnearaslargeasaBristolbarrel,cametumblingaboutmyears;oneofthemhitmeonthebackasIchancedtostoop,andknockedmedownflatonmyface;butIreceivednootherhurt,andthedwarfwaspardonedatmydesire,becauseI

Anotherday,Glumdalclitchleftmeonasmoothgrass-plottodivertmyself,whileshewalkedatsomedistancewithhergoverness。Inthemeantime,theresuddenlyfellsuchaviolentshowerofhail,thatIwasimmediatelybytheforceofit,strucktotheground:andwhenIwasdown,thehailstonesgavemesuchcruelbangsalloverthebody,asifIhadbeenpeltedwithtennis-balls;however,Imadeashifttocreeponallfours,andsheltermyself,bylyingflatonmyface,onthelee-sideofaborderoflemon-thyme,butsobruisedfromheadtofoot,thatI

couldnotgoabroadintendays。Neitheristhisatalltobewonderedat,becausenature,inthatcountry,observingthesameproportionthroughallheroperations,ahailstoneisneareighteenhundredtimesaslargeasoneinEurope;whichIcanassertuponexperience,havingbeensocuriousastoweighandmeasurethem。

Butamoredangerousaccidenthappenedtomeinthesamegarden,whenmylittlenurse,believingshehadputmeinasecureplace(whichIoftenentreatedhertodo,thatImightenjoymyownthoughts,)andhavingleftmyboxathome,toavoidthetroubleofcarryingit,wenttoanotherpartofthegardenwithhergovernessandsomeladiesofheracquaintance。Whileshewasabsent,andoutofhearing,asmallwhitespanielthatbelongedtooneofthechiefgardeners,havinggotbyaccidentintothegarden,happenedtorangeneartheplacewhereIlay:thedog,followingthescent,camedirectlyup,andtakingmeinhismouth,ranstraighttohismasterwagginghistail,andsetmegentlyontheground。Bygoodfortunehehadbeensowelltaught,thatIwascarriedbetweenhisteethwithouttheleasthurt,oreventearingmyclothes。Butthepoorgardener,whoknewmewell,andhadagreatkindnessforme,wasinaterriblefright:hegentlytookmeupinbothhishands,andaskedmehowIdid?butIwassoamazedandoutofbreath,thatIcouldnotspeakaword。InafewminutesIcametomyself,andhecarriedmesafetomylittlenurse,who,bythistime,hadreturnedtotheplacewheresheleftme,andwasincruelagonieswhenIdidnotappear,noranswerwhenshecalled。Sheseverelyreprimandedthegardeneronaccountofhisdog。Butthethingwashushedup,andneverknownatcourt,forthegirlwasafraidofthequeen\'sanger;andtruly,astomyself,Ithoughtitwouldnotbeformyreputation,thatsuchastoryshouldgoabout。

ThisaccidentabsolutelydeterminedGlumdalclitchnevertotrustmeabroadforthefutureoutofhersight。Ihadbeenlongafraidofthisresolution,andthereforeconcealedfromhersomelittleunluckyadventures,thathappenedinthosetimeswhenI

wasleftbymyself。Onceakite,hoveringoverthegarden,madeastoopatme,andifIhadnotresolutelydrawnmyhanger,andrununderathickespalier,hewouldhavecertainlycarriedmeawayinhistalons。Anothertime,walkingtothetopofafreshmole-hill,Ifelltomyneckinthehole,throughwhichthatanimalhadcastuptheearth,andcoinedsomelie,notworthremembering,toexcusemyselfforspoilingmyclothes。I

IcannottellwhetherIweremorepleasedormortifiedtoobserve,inthosesolitarywalks,thatthesmallerbirdsdidnotappeartobeatallafraidofme,butwouldhopaboutwithinayard\'sdistance,lookingforwormsandotherfood,withasmuchindifferenceandsecurityasifnocreatureatallwerenearthem。Iremember,athrushhadtheconfidencetosnatchoutofmyhand,withhisbill,aofcakethatGlumdalclitchhadjustgivenmeformybreakfast。WhenIattemptedtocatchanyofthesebirds,theywouldboldlyturnagainstme,endeavouringtopeckmyfingers,whichIdurstnotventurewithintheirreach;andthentheywouldhopbackunconcerned,tohuntforwormsorsnails,astheydidbefore。Butoneday,Itookathickcudgel,andthrewitwithallmystrengthsoluckily,atalinnet,thatIknockedhimdown,andseizinghimbytheneckwithbothmyhands,ranwithhimintriumphtomynurse。However,thebird,whohadonlybeenstunned,recoveringhimselfgavemesomanyboxeswithhiswings,onbothsidesofmyheadandbody,thoughIheldhimatarm\'s-length,andwasoutofthereachofhisclaws,thatIwastwentytimesthinkingtolethimgo。ButIwassoonrelievedbyoneofourservants,whowrungoffthebird\'sneck,andIhadhimnextdayfordinner,bythequeen\'scommand。Thislinnet,asnearasIcanremember,seemedtobesomewhatlargerthananEnglishswan。

ThemaidsofhonourofteninvitedGlumdalclitchtotheirapartments,anddesiredshewouldbringmealongwithher,onpurposetohavethepleasureofseeingandtouchingme。Theywouldoftenstripmenakedfromtoptotoe,andlaymeatfulllengthintheirbosoms;wherewithIwasmuchdisgustedbecause,tosaythetruth,averyoffensivesmellcamefromtheirskins;

Thatwhichgavememostuneasinessamongthesemaidsofhonour(whenmynursecarriedmetovisitthen)was,toseethemusemewithoutanymannerofceremony,likeacreaturewhohadnosortofconsequence:fortheywouldstripthemselvestotheskin,andputontheirsmocksinmypresence,whileIwasplacedontheirtoilet,directlybeforetheirnakedbodies,whichIamsuretomewasveryfarfrombeingatemptingsight,orfromgivingmeanyotheremotionsthanthoseofhorroranddisgust:theirskinsappearedsocoarseanduneven,sovariouslycoloured,whenIsawthemnear,withamolehereandthereasbroadasatrencher,andhairshangingfromitthickerthanpackthreads,tosaynothingfartherconcerningtherestoftheirpersons。Neitherdidtheyatallscruple,whileIwasby,todischargewhattheyhaddrank,tothequantityofatleasttwohogsheads,inavesselthatheldabovethreetuns。Thehandsomestamongthesemaidsofhonour,apleasant,frolicsomegirlofsixteen,wouldsometimessetmeastrideupononeofhernipples,withmanyothertricks,whereinthereaderwillexcusemefornotbeingoverparticular。ButI
