ThefirstrequestImade,afterIhadobtainedmyliberty,was,thatImighthavelicensetoseeMildendo,themetropolis;whichtheemperoreasilygrantedme,butwithaspecialchargetodonohurteithertotheinhabitantsortheirhouses。Thepeoplehadnotice,byproclamation,ofmydesigntovisitthetown。Thewallwhichencompasseditistwofeetandahalfhigh,andatleasteleveninchesbroad,sothatacoachandhorsesmaybedrivenverysafelyroundit;anditisflankedwithstrongtowersattenfeetdistance。Isteppedoverthegreatwesterngate,andpassedverygently,andsidling,throughthetwoprincipalstreets,onlyinmyshortwaistcoat,forfearofdamagingtheroofsandeavesofthehouseswiththeskirtsofmycoat。I
