CHAPTERXXIV——AFAST-DAYINMANSOUL

’Sanctifyafast,callasolemnassembly,gathertheeldersandalltheinhabitantsofthelandintothehouseoftheLordyourGod。’——

Inoursoftandself-indulgentdaytheveryword’tofast’hasbecomeanout-of-dateandanobsoleteword。Weneverhaveoccasiontoemploythatwordinthelivinglanguageofthepresentday。ThemenofthenextgenerationwillneedtohaveitexplainedtothemwhattheFast-daysoftheirfatherswere:whentheywereinstituted,howtheywereobserved,andwhytheywereabrogatedandgivenup。IfyoursonshouldeveraskyoujustwhattheFast-daysofyouryouthwerelike,youwilldohimagreatservice,andhemaylivetorecoverthem,ifyouwillanswerhiminthisway。ShowhimhowtotakehisCrudenandhowtomakeapicturetohisopeningmindoftheFast-daysofScripture。AndtellhimplainlyforwhatthingsinfathersandinsonsthosefastswereordainedofGod。

AndthenfortheFast-daysofthePuritanperiodlethimreadaloudtoyouthispowerfulpassageintheHolyWar。PublicpreachingandpublicprayerenteredlargelyintothefastingofthePropheticalandthePuritanperiods;andJohnBunyan,afterJoel,hastoldussomethingsabouttheFast-daypreachingofhisdaythatitwillbewellforus,bothpreachersandpeople,tobeginwith,andtolaywelltoheart。

Buthewasverypertinentintheapplication,insomuchthathemadealltheeldersandalltheirpeopleinMansoultotremble。SidneySmithsaysthatwhateverelseasermonmaybeormaynotbe,itmustbeinterestingifitistodoanygood。Now,pertinentpreachingisalwaysinterestingpreaching。Nothinginterestsmenlikethemselves。Andpertinentpreachingisjustpreachingtomenaboutthemselves,——abouttheirinterests,theirlossesandtheirgains,theirhopesandtheirfears,theirtrialsandtheirtribulations。BoanergestookbothhistextandhistreatmentofhistextfromhisMaster,andweknowhowpertinentlyTheMasterpreached。HispreachingwaswithsuchpertinencethattheonehalfofHishearerswenthomesaying,Nevermanspakelikethisman,whiletheotherhalfgnashedatHimwiththeirteeth。OurLordneverlecturedonEuroclydon。HeknewwhatwasinmanandHelecturedandpreachedaccordingly。Andifwewishtohavepraiseofourbestpeople,andofHimwhosepeopletheyare,letuslookintoourownheartsandpreach。Thatwillbepertinenttoourpeoplewhichisfirstpertinenttoourselves。Weepyourself,saidanoldpoettoanewbeginner;weepyourselfifyouwouldmakemeweep。’Formyownpart,’saidThomasShepardtosomeministersfromhisdeathbed,’Ineverpreachedasermonwhich,inthecomposing,didnotcostmeprayers,withstrongcriesandtears。I
