AfewdaysafterthisIhadbusinessinoneofthegreatdepartments。FromthevarioussignsoverthedoorsofitsvariousofficesandbureausitalwaysoddlyremindedmeofStewart’sorArnoldandConstable’s。Youcouldgetpensions,patents,andplants。Youcouldgetlandandtheseedstoputinit,andtheIndianstoprowlroundit,andwhatnot。Therewasaperpetualclangingofofficedeskbells,andarunninghitherandthitherofmessengersstronglysuggestiveof"Cash47。"
AsmybusinesswaswiththemanagerofthisGreatNationalFancyShop,Imanagedtopushbythesad-eyed,eager-facedcrowdofmenandwomenintheanteroom,andenteredthesecretary’sroom,consciousofhavingleftbehindmeagreatdealofenvyanduncharitablenessofspirit。AsIopenedthedoorIheardamonotonousflowofWesternspeechwhichIthoughtIrecognized。
