Thesearemycountsagainst"Class-Day,"asitisnowconducted。Itcontainsmuchthatiscalculatedtopromoteneitherlearningnorgodliness,buttoretardboth。Neitherliterarynormoralexcellenceseemstoenterasanelementintoitsstandard。Inpointofnotorietyandpopularinterestitseemstometoreach,ifnottoover-top,Commencement-Day,andthereforeittendstosubordinatescholarshiptootherandinfinitelylessimportantmatters。Itinamannernecessitatesanexpenditurewhichmanyareillabletobear,andunderwhich,Ihavereasontobelieve,manyparentsdogroan,beingburdened。Ithasnotthepleasureandwarmthofreuniontorecommendit,foritprecedesseparation。Theexpenseisnotincurredbymenwhoaremastersoftheirowncareer,whoknowwheretheystandandwhattheycando;butchieflybyboyswhoaredependentuponothers,andwhoseknowledgeofwaysandmeansislimited,whiletheirknowledgeofwantsisdeepandpressingandaggressive。Itisanextraordinaryandunnecessaryexpense,cominginthemidstofordinaryandnecessaryexpense,whilethequestionofreimbursementisstillentirelyinabeyance。Itlaunchesyoungmenattheoutsetoftheircareerintoextravaganceanddisplay,——limitedindeedinrange,butrampantwithinthatrange,——andtherebythrowstheinfluenceofhighestauthorityinfavorof,ratherthanagainst,thatrecklessprofusion,display,anddissipationwhichistheweaknessandthebaneofoursociallife。Itsignalizesinamarkedandpublicmannerthecompletionofthemostvariedandthoroughcourseofstudyinthecountry,andthecommencementofacareerwhichshouldbethemostnobleandbeneficial,notbypeculiarandappropriateceremonies,butbythecommonestritesofthelecture-roomandball-room;andI
cannotbutthinkthat,especiallyatthisperiodofhistory,whennotreasureisesteemedtoopreciousforsacrifice,andthelandisredwiththebloodofherbestandbravest,——whenHarvardherselfmournsforherchildrenlost,butgloriesinheroesfallen,——thatthemostobviousandprominentcustomsofClass-Daywouldbemorehonoredinthebreachthanintheobservance。

Asitmayneveragainhappentometobewritingaboutcolleges,IdesiretosayinthispapereverythingIhavetosayonthesubject,andthereforetakethisopportunitytorefertothepracticeof"hazing,"althoughitisbutremotelyconnectedwithClass-Day。Ifweshouldfinditamonghinds,aremnantofthebarbarismsoftheDarkAges,blindlyhandeddownbysuchslow-growingpeopleasgotomillwiththeirmealonsideofthesaddleandastoneontheothertobalance,astheirfathersdid,becauseitneveroccurredtothemtodividethemealintotwoparcelsandmakeitbalanceitself,weshouldbesurprised;but"hazing"occursamongboyswhohavebeenaccustomedtothecirculationofideas,boysoldenoughandintelligentenoughunderstandthedifferencebetweenbrutalityandfrolic,oldenoughtoknowwhathonorandragemean,andthereforeIcannotconceivehowtheyshouldcountenanceapracticewhichentirelyignoresanddefieshonor,andwhichnotasingleredeemingfeature。Ithasneitherwisdomnorwit,nospirit,nogenius,noimpulsiveness,scarcelyboyishmirth。
Anarrowrangeofstalepracticaljokes,lightedupbynogleamoforiginality,seemstobetransmittedfromyeartoyearwithasmuchfidelityastheHebrewBible,andnothalfthelatitudeallowedtoclergymenoftheEnglishEstablishedChurch。Butbesidesitsplatitude,itsoneover-poweringandfatalcharacteristicisitsintenseandessentialcowardice。
Cowardiceisitsheadandfrontandbonesandblood。Oneboydoesnotsingleoutanotherboyofhisownweight,andtakehischancesinafairstand-upfight。ButapartyofSophomoresclubtogetherinsuchnumbersastorenderoppositionuseless,andpounceupontheirvictimunawares,asBrooksandhisminionspounceduponSumner,andastheSouthernchivalryisgiventodoing。Forsweetpity\'ssake,letthismodeofwarfarebemonopolizedbytheSouthernchivalry。
Thelameexcuseisoffered,thatitdoestheFreshmengood,——
takestheconceitoutofthem。ButifthereisanyClassinCollegesodivestedofconceitastobejustifiedinthrowingstones,itissurelynottheSophomoreClass。Moreover,whatevergooditmaydothesufferers,itdoesharm,andonlyharm,totheperpetrators;andneithertheLawnortheGospelrequiresamantoimproveotherpeople\'scharactersattheexpenseofhisown。Nobodycandoawrongwithoutinjuringhimself;andnoyoungmancandoamean,cowardlywronglikethiswithoutsufferingseverestinjury。Itistheveryspiritoftheslaveholder,adastardlyanddetestable,atyrannicalandcruelspirit。Ifyoungmenaresoblindedbycustomandhabitthatameannessisnottothemameannessbecauseithasbeenpractisedforyears,somuchtheworsefortheyoungmen,andsomuchtheworseforourcountry,whosesweatofbloodatteststhebaleandblastwhichthisevilspirithaswrought。
Ifuprightness,ifcourage,ifhumanityandrectitudeandthemindconscioustoitselfofrightareanythingmorethananame,lettheyoungmenwhomeantomaketimeministertolifescornthisdebasingandstupidpractice。
Why,asoneresourceagainstthis,aswellasforitsownintrinsicimportance,shouldtherenotbeamilitarydepartmenttoeverycollege,aswellasamathematicaldepartment?Whymightnoteverycollegebeamilitarynormalschool,sothattheexuberanceandriotofanimalspirits,theyoung,adventurousstrengthandjoyinbeing,mightnotonlybekeptfromstrikingoutasnowinillegitimate,unworthy,andhurtfuldirections,butmightbecometheverybasisandgroundworkofusefulpurposes。Suchexercisewouldbesopromotiveofhealthanddiscipline,itwouldsotrainandLIMBERthephysicalpowers,thatthesuperiorqualityofstudywould,Idoubtnot,morethanatoneforwhateverdeficiencyinquantitymightresult。AndevensupposealittlelessattentionshouldbegiventoEuclidandHomer,whichisofthegreaterimportancenow-a-days,anearthatcandetectafalsequantityinaGreekverse,oraneyethatcansightaRebelninehundredyardsoff,andahandthatcanpullatriggerandshoothim?Knowledgeispower;butknowledgemustsharpenitsedgesandpolishitspoints,ifitwouldbegreatliestavailableindayslikethese。
Theknowledgethatcanplantbatteriesandplancampaigns,thatisfertileinexpedientsandwisetobafflethefoe,isjustnowthestrongestpower。Diagramsandfirst-aoristsaregood,andtheywhohavefedonsuchmeathavegrowngreat,anddonethestateserviceintheirgeneration;butthesetimesdemandnewmeasuresandnewmen。Itisconcededthatweshallprobablybeformanyyearsamilitarynation。Atleastagenerationofvigilanceshallbethepriceofourliberty。Andevenofpeacewecanhavenostrongerassurancethanawiseandwieldyreadinessforwar。Buttheeducationofourunwarlikedaysisnotadequatetotheemergenciesofthismartialhour。
WemustbeseasonedwithsomethingstrongerthanAtticsalt,orweshallbecastoutandtroddenunderfootofmen。True,alleducationisworthy。Everythingthatexercisesthemindfitsitforitswork;butprofessionaleducationisindispensabletoprofessionalmen。Andtheprofession,parexcellence,ofeverymanofthisgenerationiswar。Countryoverridesallpersonalconsiderations。Lawyer,minister,whatnot,aman\'sfirstdutyisthesalvationofhiscountry。Whenshecalls,hemustgo;andbeforeshecalls,lethim,ifpossible,preparehimselftoserveherinthebestmanner。AsthingsarenowatHarvard,collegeboysarescarcelybetterthancow-boysforthearmy。Theircostlyeducationrunsgreatlytowaste。Itgivesnothemdirectadvantageovertheclodwhostumblesagainstatrisyllable。Sofarasitmakesthembettermen,ofcoursetheyarebettersoldiers;butforallofmilitaryeducationwhichtheircollegegivesthem,theyarefitonlyforprivates,whosesoledutyistoobey。Theyknownothingofmilitarydrillortacticsorstrategy。TheStatecannotaffordthiswaste。Shecannotaffordtolosethefruitsofmentaltoilanddiscipline。Sheneedstrainedmindevenmorethantrainedmuscle。Itishardertofindbrainsthantofindhands。Theaveragementalendowmentmaybenohigherincollegethanout;butgrantingittobeashigh,theculturewhichitreceivesgivesitimmenseadvantage。Thefruitsofthatculture,readiness,resources,comprehensiveness,shouldallbeheldintheserviceoftheState。Militaryknowledgeandpracticeshouldbeimpartedandenforcedtoutilizeability,andmakeittheinstrument,notonlyofpersonal,butofnationalwelfare。Thateducationwhichgivesmentheadvantageoverothersintheraceoflifeshouldbesodirectedastoconveythatadvantagetocountry,whenshestandsinneed。Everycollegemightandshouldbemadeanurseryofathletesinmindandbody,clear-eyed,stout-hearted,strong-

Therearesuccessesmoremelancholythananyfailure。Therearefailuresmorenoblethansuccess。Themanwhobeganlifeasaploughboy,whowentfromhisfather\'sfarmtothegreatcitywithhiswardrobetiedupinhishandkerchief,andonedollarinhispocket,andwhobyapplication,economy,andforecasthasamassedafortune,isnotnecessarilyasuccessfulman。Ifhisobjectwastoamassafortune,heissofarsuccessful;butitisameanandmiserableobject,andhislifewouldbeacontemptible,ifitwerenotaterrible,failure。
Wedonotkeepthissufficientlyinmind。Americansociety,andperhapsallsociety,istooapttodohomagetomaterialprosperity;butmaterialprosperitymaybeobtainedbythesacrificeofmoralgrandeur;andsoobtained,itisanappleofSodom。Amanmaycallouthiswholeenergy,wieldallhispower,andwealthfollowasoneoftheresults。Thisiswell。
Wealthmayevenbeanobject,ifitbeasubordinateobject,——
theservantofahigherpower。Wealthmayministertothebestpartofman,——butonlyminister,notmaster。Onlyasaministeritdeservesregard。Whenitusurpsthethroneandbecomesmonarch,itisofallthingsmostpitifulandabject。
Themanwhosetsoutwiththedeterminationtoberichasanend,setsoutwithaveryignobledetermination;andhewhoseeksorvalueswealthfortherespectwhichitsecuresandthepositionitgives,isnotverymuchhigherinthescale;yetsuchpeopleareoftenhelduptotheadmirationandimitationofAmericanyouth;andoftenerstillhavethosemenbeenheldupforimitationwho,whetherbydeterminationordrift,hadbecomerich,andwhosesoleclaimtodistinctionwasthattheyhadbecomerich。AgainandagainIhaveseen"success"whichseemedtometobethebrandofignominyratherthanthestampofworth,——theepitaphofculture,ifnotofcharacter。Ilookonwithaprofoundandregretfulpity。Yousuccessful,——YOU!

Now,then,successbeingthebestthing,wedowelltostriveforit;butsuccessbeingdifficulttoattain,ifnotunattainable,itremainsforustowringfromourfailuresallthesapandsustenanceandsuccorthatareinthem,ifsobewemaygrowtherebytoafinerandfullerrichness,andhearonedaytherapturousvoicebiduscomeuphigher。

Eveninthisverypointliesoneofthemiseriesofchildhood,thatnophilosophycomestotempertheirsorrow。Wedonotknowwhywearetroubled,butweknowthereissomegood,grandreasonforit。Thepoorlittlechildrendonotknoweventhat。
Theyfindtroubleutterlyinconsequentandunreasonable。Theproblemofevilistothemabsolutelyincapableofsolution。

NowIshouldlike,HerrNarr,tohaveyoulookattheothersideforamoment:forthereisapositiveandanegativepole。Childrennotonlyhavetheirfullshareofmisery,buttheydonothavetheirfullshareofhappiness;atleast,theymissmanysourcesofhappinesstowhichwehaveaccess。Theyhavenoconsciousness。Theyhavesensations,butnoperceptions。Welooklonginglyuponthem,becausetheyaresograceful,andsimple,andnatural,andfrank,andartless;butthoughthismaymakeushappy,itdoesnotmakethemhappy,becausetheydon\'tknowanythingaboutit。Itneveroccurstothemthattheyaregraceful。Nochildiseverartlesstohimself。Theonlydifferenceheseesbetweenyouandhimselfis,thatyouaregrown-upandheislittle。SometimesIthinkhedoeshaveadimperceptionthatwhenheisill,itisbecausehehaseatentoomuch,andhemusttakemedicine,andfeedonheartlessdrytoast,while,whenyouareill,youhavethedyspepsia,andgotoEurope。Butthebeautyandsweetnessofchildrenareentirelywastedonthemselves,andtheirfranknessisasourceofinfiniteannoyancetoeachother。A
manenjoysHIMSELF。Ifheishandsome,orwise,orwitty,hegenerallyknowsit,andtakesgreatsatisfactioninit;butachilddoesnot。Heloseshalfhishappinessbecausehedoesnotknowthatheishappy。Ifheeverhasanyconsciousness,itisanisolated,momentarything,withnorelationtoanythingantecedentorsubsequent。Itlaysholdonnothing。
Notonlyhavetheynoperceptionofthemselves,buttheyhavenoperceptionofanything。Theyneverrecognizeanexigency。
Theydonotsalutegreatness。HasnottheAutocrattoldusofsomeladywhorememberedacertainmomentouseventinourRevolutionaryWar,andremembereditonlybyandbecauseoftheregretsheexperiencedatleavingherdollbehindwhenherfamilywasforcedtoflyfromhome?Whathumiliationisthis!

Thedinofarms,thewavingofbanners,thegleamofswords,fearfulsightsandgreatsignsintheheavens,orthestill,smallvoicethatthrillswhenwindandfireandearthquakehavesweptby,mayproclaimthecomingoftheLord,andtheystumblealong,munchingbread-and-butter。OutinthesolitudesNaturespeakswithhermany-tonedvoices,andtheyaredeaf。Theyhaveablindsensationalenjoyment,suchasasquirrelorachickenmayhave,buttheycaninnowiseinterprettheMightyMother,norevenhearherwords。Theoceanmoanshissecrettounheedingears。Theagonyoftheunderworldfindsnospeechinthemountain-peaks,bareandgrand。Theoldoaksstretchouttheirarmsinvain。Grovewhisperstogrove,andtherobinstopstolisten,butthechildplayson。Hebruisesthehappybutter-cups,hecrushesthequiveringanemone,andhiscruelfingersarestainedwiththeharebell\'spurpleblood。Ripplingwaterfallandrollingriver,themajestyofsombrewoods,thewildwasteofwilderness,thefairyspiritsofsunshine,thesparklingwineofJune,andthegoldenlanguorofOctober,thechildpassesby,andadipperofblackberries,orapocketfulofchestnuts,fillsandsatisfieshishorriblelittlesoul。

week-oldbabygivesnomoresignofintelligence,oflove,orambition,orhope,orfear,orpassion,orpurpose,thanaweek-oldmonkey,andisnothalfsofriskyandfunny。Infact,itisapuling,scowling,wretched,dismal,desperate-lookinganimal。Itisonlyasitgrowsoldthatthebeastgiveswayandtheangel-wingsbud,andallalongthroughinfancyandchildhoodthebeastgiveswayandgiveswayandtheangel-wingsbudandbud;andyetweentertainourangelsounawares,thatwelookbackregretfullytothetimewhentheangelwasinabeyanceandthebeastravedregnant。
Theonlyadvantagewhichchildhoodhasovermanhoodistheabsenceofforeboding,andthisindeedismuch。Alargepartofoursufferingisanticipatory,muchofwhichchildrenarespared。Thepresenthappinessiscloudedforthembynoshadowypossibility;butforthissmallindemnityshallweoffsetthegloryofourmanlyyears?Becausetheirnarrownesscannottakeinthecontingenciesthatthreatenpeace,aretheyblessedaboveallothers?Doesnotthesamenarrownesscutthemofffromthebrightcertaintythatunderliesalldoubtsandfears?Ifignoranceisbliss,manstandsatthesummitofmortalmisery,andthescaleofhappinessisadescendingone。
Wemustgodownintotheocean-depths,where,forthescintillantsoul,adim,twilightinstinctlightsupgelatinouslives。Ifchildhoodisindeedthehappiestperiod,thenthemysteriousGod-breathedbreathwasnoboon,andtheDeityiscruel。Immortalitywerewellexchangedfortheblankofannihilation。

Lifedoesturnoutdifferentlyfromwhatwasanticipated。Itisaninfinitelyhigherandholierandhappierthingthanourchildhoodfancied。Theworldthatlaybeforeusthenwasbutatinseltoytotheworldwhichourfirmfeettread。Wehaveenteredintotheundiscoveredland。Wehaveexploreditswaysofpleasantness,itsdepthsofdole,itsmountainsofdifficulty,itsvalleysofdelight,and,behold!itisverygood。Stormshavesweptfiercely,buttheyswepttopurify。
