ItisnotstrangethatIdidnotdie。Iknewandwasupheldbytwothings:thefirst,theLadyOmbymyside;thesecond,thecertainfaiththatthetimewouldcomewhenmythumbsandfingerswouldfast-lockinthegulletofChongMong-ju。

milestripallfarms,villagesandcitieshadbeendestroyed。Itwasnoman’sland,infestedwithwildanimalsandtraversedbycompaniesofmountedTigerHunterswhosebusinesswastokillanyhumanbeingtheyfound。Thatwaytherewasnoescapeforus,norwasthereanyescapeforusbysea。

Astheyearspassedmysevenfellow-cuniescamemoretofrequentFusan。Itwasonthesouth-eastcoastwheretheclimatewasmilder。

Butmorethanclimate,itlaynearestofallCho-SentoJapan。

ItwasthegreatlitterofChongMong-ju,bornebyeightcoolies,withoutridersbeforeandbehindandflutteringattendantsoneitherside。

Twoemperors,civilwar,famine,andadozenpalacerevolutionshadcomeandgone;andChongMong-juremained,eventhenthegreatpoweratKeijo。Hemusthavebeennearlyeightythatspringmorningonthecliffswhenhesignalledwithpalsiedhandforhislittertoberesteddownthathemightgazeuponuswhomhehadpunishedforsolong。

"Now,Omyking,"theLadyOmmumbledlowtome,thenturnedtowhineanalmsofChongMong-ju,whomsheaffectednottorecognize。

Andtheredwrathwasupinme,rippingandtearingatmywilltobefree。SmallwonderthatIshookwiththeefforttocontrol。Theshaking,happily,theytookfortheweaknessofage。Iheldupmybrassbeggingbowl,andwhinedmoredolefully,andblearedmyeyestohidethebluefireIknewwasinthem,andcalculatedthedistanceandmystrengthfortheleap。

ThenIwassweptawayinablazeofred。Therewasacrashingofcurtainsandcurtain-polesandasquawkingandsquallingofattendantsasmyhandsclosedonChongMong-ju’sthroat。Thelitterover-turned,andIscarceknewwhetherIwasheadsorheels,butmyclutchneverrelaxed。
