Inherpocketasshespokeherhandresteduponthelittlesackoftobacco,whichrespondedaccusinglytothetouchofherrestlessfingers;andshefoundtimetowonderwhyshewasbuildingupthisfictionforMr。ArthurRussell。HisdiscoveryofWalter\'sdeviceforwhilingawaythedulleveninghadshamedanddistressedher;butshewouldhavesufferednolessifalmostanyotherhadbeenthediscoverer。Inthisgentleman,afterhearingthathewasMildred\'sMr。ArthurRussell,Alicefeltnottheslightest"personalinterest";andtherewasyettodevelopinherlifesuchathingasaninterestnotpersonal。Attwenty-twothisstateofaffairsisnotunique。
