Whetheritwouldbepossiblethathecoulddosowasdoubtful;butatleasttherewasahope,andwithitthefeelingofquietresignationwithwhichVincenthadfacedwhatappearedtobeinevitableatoncedisappeared,andwassucceededbyarestlesslongingforaction。Hisbrainwasbusyatonceincalculatingthechancesofhisbeingorderedforinstantexecutionorofthesentencebeingpostponedtillthefollowingmorning,and,inthelattercase,withthequestionofwhatguardwouldbeprobablyplacedoverhim,andhowTonywouldsetabouttheattempttoaidhimtoescape。

Inthatcasehowwouldhemanagetoapproachhim,andwhatmeanswouldheusetodirecttheattentionofthesentriesinanotherdirection?HethoughtovertheplansthathehimselfwouldadoptwereheinTony\'splace。Thefirstthingwouldbe,ofcourse,tomakethesentriesdrunkifpossible。Thisshouldnotbeadifficulttaskwithmenwhosenotionsofdisciplineweresolaxasthoseofthenegroes;butItwouldbenoeasymatterforTonytoobtainspirits,forthesewerestrictlyprohibitedintheFederalcamp。PerhapshemighthelpTonyinthisway。Hefortunatelyhadasmallnotebookwithapencilinhispocket,andashisguardswerestillatthewindowhewroteasfollows:
