Hefoundthenarrowpath,itswhitecrossedbyslowlymovingblackbarsofshadow,andstealthilyhefollowedthis,keenofeyeandear,stoppingateveryrustle。HewellknewthebenchLucyhadmentioned。Itwasinaremotecornerofthegrove,underbigtreesnearthespring。OnceSlonethoughthehadaglimpseofwhite。Perhapsitwasonlymoonlight。Heslippedonandon,andwhenbeyondthebranchingpathsthatledtowardthehousehebreathedfreer。Thegroveappeareddeserted。Atlasthecrossedtherunwayfromthespring,smelledthecool,wetmossandwatercress,andsawthebigcottonwood,loomingdarkabovetheothertrees。Apatchofmoonlightbrightenedalittlegladejustattheedgeofdenseshadecastbythecottonwood。Herethebenchstood。Itwasempty!

Slone\'srapturevanished。Hewassuddenlychilled。Shewasnotthere!Shemighthavebeenintercepted。Hewouldnotseeher。Thedisappointment,thesuddenrelaxation,washorrible。Thenawhite,slendershapeflashedfrombesidetheblacktree-trunkandflewtowardhim。Itwasnoiseless,likeaspecter,andswiftasthewind。Washedreaming?Hefeltsostrange。Then——thewhiteshapereachedhimandheknew。

Lucyleapedintohisarms。
