ItwasSatan\'sinexhaustibleenergyandgoodspiritsthatmostimpressedthem。Histeethseemedperpetuallytoachewithdesire,andinlieuofblacklegshehuskedthecocoanutsthatfellfromthetreesinthecompound,kepttheenclosureclearofintrudinghens,andmadeahostileacquaintancewitheveryboss-boywhocametoreport。Hewasunabletoforgetthetormentofhispuppyhood,whereineverlastinghatredoftheblackhadbeenwovenintothefibresofconsciousness;andsuchaterrordidhemakehimselfthatSheldonwasforcedtoshuthimupinthelivingroomwhen,foranyreason,strangenativeswerepermittedinthecompound。ThisalwayshurtSatan\'sfeelingsandfannedhiswrath,sothateventhehouse-boyshadtowatchoutforhimwhenhewasfirstreleased。

CHAPTERXI——THEPORTADAMSCROWD

"Whatnameyou?"Sheldonsuddenlyshouted,pointingdirectlyatthemanwhoheldthegun,whostartledandloweredthemuzzle。

Sheldonstillheldthewhiphand,andheintendedtokeepit。

"Clearout,allyoufellaboys,"heordered。"Clearoutandwalkalongsaltwater。Savvee!"

"Metalk,"spokeupafatandfilthysavagewhosehairychestwascakedwiththeunwasheddirtofyears。
