Heseizedhishatanddeparted。Onceinthestreet,however,hisirritationpassed。Aswasthehabitoftheman,hebeganmoreclearlytoseeNewmark’sside,andsomoreemphaticallytoblamehimself。Afterall,whenhegotrightdowntotheessentials,hecouldnotbutacknowledgethatNewmark’sangerwasjustified。Forhisownprivateendshehadjeopardisedthefirm’sproperty。MoreofabusinessmanmighthavereflectedthatNewmark,asfinancialhead,shouldhaveprotectedthefirmagainstallcontingencies;

shouldhaveseentoitthatitmetHeinzman’snotes,insteadoftyingupitsresourcesinunnecessaryways。Orde’sowndelinquencybulkedtoolargeinhiseyestoadmithisperceptionofthis。BythetimehehadreachedHeinzman’soffice,thelastofhisirritationhadvanished。OnlyherealisedclearlynowthatitwouldhardlydotoaskNewmarkforarenewalofthepersonalnoteonwhichdependedhisretentionofhisBoomCompanystockunlesshecouldrenewtheHeinzmannotealso。ThisisprobablywhatNewmarkintended。

Lambertturned,showingaperfectlyroundface,ornamentedbyadotofanose,twodotsofeyessetratherclosetogether,andapursedupmouth。Hisskinwasverybrownandshiny,andwassofilledbythefleshbeneathastotaketheappearanceofhavingbeeninflated。
