Herewefindourselves,suddenly,notinacriticalspeculation,butinaholyplace,andshouldgoverywarilyandreverently。Westandbeforethesecretoftheworld,therewhereBeingpassesintoAppearance,andUnityintoVariety。

TheUniverseistheexternisationofthesoul。Whereverthelifeis,thatburstsintoappearancearoundit。Ourscienceissensual,andthereforesuperficial。Theearth,andtheheavenlybodies,physics,andchemistry,wesensuallytreat,asiftheywereself-existent;butthesearetheretinueofthatBeingwehave。“Themightyheaven,“saidProclus,“exhibits,initstransfigurations,clearimagesofthesplendorofintellectualperceptions;beingmovedinconjunctionwiththeunapparentperiodsofintellectualnatures。“

Therefore,sciencealwaysgoesabreastwiththejustelevationoftheman,keepingstepwithreligionandmetaphysics;or,thestateofscienceisanindexofourself-knowledge。Sinceeverythinginnatureanswerstoamoralpower,ifanyphenomenonremainsbruteanddark,itisthatthecorrespondingfacultyintheobserverisnotyetactive。
