Regardingourplans,wefinallydecidedthatMina\'sguesswascorrect,andthatifanywaterwaywaschosenfortheCount\'sescapebacktohisCastle,theSerethandthentheBistritzaatitsjunction,wouldbetheone。Wetookit,thatsomewhereaboutthe47thdegree,northlatitude,wouldbetheplacechosenforcrossingthecountrybetweentheriverandtheCarpathians。

Wehavenofearinrunningatgoodspeeduptheriveratnight。

Thereisplentyofwater,andthebanksarewideenoughaparttomakesteaming,eveninthedark,easyenough。

AsIlooked,theeyessawthesinkingsun,andthelookofhateinthemturnedtotriumph。

But,ontheinstant,camethesweepandflashofJonathan\'sgreatknife。
