Betweennoonandsunsettheywouldmeet。

DuanereturnedtoFairdaleandcampedinthemesquitetillthetwenty—thirdofthemonth。Thefewdaysseemedendless。AllhecouldthinkofwasthatthehourinwhichhemustdisgraceRayLongstrethwasslowlybutinexorablycoming。Inthatwaitingtimehelearnedwhatlovewasandalsoduty。Whenthedayatlastdawnedherodelikeonepossesseddowntheroughslope,hurdlingthestonesandcrashingthroughthebrush,withasoundinhisearsthatwasnotalltherushofthewind。

Somethingdraggedathim。
