Leicesterremainedlikeonestupefied,tillheheardthetramplingofthehorses,asVarney,whotooknotimeeventochangehisdress,threwhimselfintothesaddle,and,followedbyasingleservant,setoffforBerkshire。AtthesoundtheEarlstartedfromhisseat,andrantothewindow,withthemomentarypurposeofrecallingtheunworthycommissionwithwhichhehadentrustedoneofwhomheusedtosayheknewnovirtuouspropertysaveaffectiontohispatron。ButVarneywasalreadybeyondcall;andthebright,starryfirmament,whichtheageconsideredastheBookofFate,lyingspreadbeforeLeicesterwhenheopenedthecasement,divertedhimfromhisbetterandmoremanlypurpose。
