Itwasoccupiedbyahaggardman,withalongwhitemoustacheandfeaturesthatseemedwastedbyinwardstruggleandfever。Atthefirstsoundofhervoiceheturnedquicklytowardsher,liftedhimselfonhiselbow,andgazedfixedlyinherface。

Despiteherrigidself-possessionthewomanstarted,glancedhurriedlyaround,anddrewnearertohim。
